iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

Thank you for that explanation! Yea, Idk if mine could be because of that, a hardware issue, or a software issue. When I was setting up the phone, it got so hot that it was almost too uncomfortable to hold. I wanted to put it down, but I wanted to keep testing out my new phone so I put up with the heat. It also seemed to warm up when I was just using Spotify and browsing through safari. Then when I used FaceTime for the first time, it heated up pretty bad again for the first 20 minutes or so, then it seemed to cool down. Same thing when I first put it to charge. I had put it down to charge and when I went to go pick it back up after just a few minutes of putting it to charge, I could feel the heat through my Otterbox Symmetry case (which is made entirely out of hard plastic and is relatively thick compared to today’s cases). When I took off the case, the phone was pretty hot, again, to the point where I wanted to put it down, but could still barely bear the heat. I had heat and battery issues with my regular 12 pro, which is the whole reason why I upgraded in the first place so it’s upsetting that my brand new 15 pro max is going through this. I wonder if this is being experienced on a wider scale or if we just got unlucky and got defective phones. 😅

Hello,

I just had the same problem during a call with an iPhone 15 Pro on iOS 17.0.2.

The battery went from 60 to 25% in just 1 hour of calling.

The iPhone was very, very hot and I preferred to stop the call.

I checked the battery usage statistics during the 55 minute call via Settings then Battery.

71% correspond to "Home and lock screen" and 29% to "Phone".

I recently got the iPhone 15 Pro, and I've encountered the common issues that many others seem to be experiencing. I sought assistance from Apple Support, and they advised me to perform a factory reset without restoring from a backup after conducting a diagnostic on my phone. Despite following these steps, the problem persists – the device continues to overheat and exhibit excessive battery drain. It's unclear whether this is a widespread issue affecting all devices or if it's limited to the initial batch of iPhone 15 pros.

The chips draw more power to make up for the lower minimum quality (the percentage of chips that perform x at a power level is yield). As such you may be lucky and get a beautiful chip or you may not. Every chip maker bins their chips, because no chip is completely free of defects. For this reason a chip model has (sometimes large) variations in performance like a bell curve. Apple chooses somewhere in the bell curve to be min and calls it an A17 when they get it from TSMC. This has been true for decades, it’s simply a matter of how much extra wattage you need for defects. In this case it looks like some units need a lot of heat or a lot of performance sacrifice when you get a chip with more defects.

In the past, Android phones have had lower standards than Apple. I’m not sure if Apple has a lower or higher standard than Android competitors although Id be surprised if it weren’t very high, if not the highest. That said, I have only ever used iPhones, and perhaps this time the A17 should have waited a while while the chip manufacturer increased yield. Earlier this year TSMC had a 55 percent yield, meaning they were throwing away 45 percent. At the time of writing 80 percent is claimed. I do not know how the yield was attained, but if it were by improving performance per watt on the average unit or minimum acceptable A17. We wouldn’t be talking.

Yes, but it's a new phone and it's still likely doing things in the background.

Still, you should charge it EVERY night, while you sleep, with Optimized Battery Charge turned on. Your phone will also backup to iCloud while you sleep and you'll never have to worry about losing data, if something unfortunate were to happen.

I’m also experiencing severe heat on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. It’s been a week since I set it up, so it shouldn’t be indexing. It’s really hot doing normal, non-intensive tasks, such as reading this playing music or reading this forum and writing this reply in Safari. The case is so hot it feels like it’s burning my hands as I write this. It’s worse on the left side of the phone, where the CPU is located, but the whole device is hot. I’ve experienced the phone refusing to charge until it cools down, and I’ve had the phone lock up for being too hot until it cools down after just picking up a cold not-in-use phone and opening the camera for under two minutes. I’ve had the phone sitting not-in-use on a table, and pick it up and it is borderline warm/hot. This is really unacceptable. The increased heat shows the CPU is ramping up and draining power, which would also explain why the battery life and standby battery has been worse than even my four year old iPhone 11 Pro Max. So it’s not just a little uncomfortable heat, it’s actually causing lockups until the phone cools down, keeping the phone from being used. I’ve had iPhones get warm before in processor-intensive activities, but I’ve never had one get “hot.”

I’m concerned about longevity - the damage and increased wear to the internal components, OLED display, and battery from constant exposure to higher temperatures like this over time. I can feel the heat through a case, but putting it in a case just traps more heat against the phone. The front glass is also hot. I have never really experienced any iPhone having hot to touch front glass before. This can’t be good for the display panel.

Apple really needs to comment with a real answer and explain how they intend to fix the problem, if possible. Otherwise, I am going to have to bring this phone back. And otherwise, it’s perfect. But I can’t keep something this expensive if it’s too hot to hold, potentially unsafe (burns, fire), has longevity and durability concerns, and doesn’t work properly due to overheating and refusing to work until it cools down.

I just got off the phone with apple support; not only should we write here but storm the Bastille verbally. They need to hear from us!

During data transfer (they should have indicated that BOTH old and new phone be charging for it to work properly), the phone heated up and the battery drained. OK, not unbearably hot and I can understand heating and battery drain during such a process. The next day, Sunday into Monday, the battery was so lousy I couldn't believe that this is what I am about to give up my iPhone 13 Pro Max for: I never, ever had a situation where at about 7:00PM a battery was in the 20% range. Unacceptable.

This morning, however, the phone has taken on more of the old iPhone 13 Pro Max persona. Not hot. (wasn't doing anything), battery not draining like crazy. (so far. again, it's just sitting there)

I am going to give it a bit more time to decide its fate and hopefully apple will figure this out. FAST!

PS: I turned off the "always on" screen the "raise to wake" screen and some background app refreshing. So much for touted features. (ios 17.0.2)
