iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

Iphone 15 pro 256 blue titanium bought on launching day, once setup and ready for use first overheating problem when using WhatsApp and Instagram outside (I was not calculating a black hole mass...), screen goes dimming to 30% bright and I'm shocked for that...so I went back to Apple Store and return it for new unit, the second one same problem, the phone runs easy hot doing easy tasks, and the behavior is like an oven when try to record 4k 60 fps video along two minutes only. Enough for me, second unit returned it today and that´s all, I´m not going to pay a **** for Apple design errors or insufficient TSMC 3nm chip manufacturing quality.

OK.....just what do you think complaining here is doing for you? NOTHING. Complain to Apple. This is a user to user only forum.

Facetime, nor streaming music, nor making phone calls is causing ANY heat on either our iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. NO HEATING AT ALL. If you are still experiencing heating, take it to your Apple Store for testing. Or wait for the update Apple has promised to release soon. Your choice.

Same experience, along with draining 50% of my battery. I called Apple support and they were clueless. I went to the Apple store and they ran diagnostics, but found nothing. They offered to perform a factory reset to see if the issue persisted. I called Apple sales to have the phone replaced, but they do not offer advanced replacement. AppleCare refused to replace the phone because it was still within the 14 day warranty period. I am sending the 15 back for a full refund.

It will be good for those experiencing problems to indicate the situation where the problem is.

  • We know some apps are buggy eg Instagram. What app are you using? Are all other apps closed.
  • We know that there are issues with some networks. What network are you on?
  • Is it being observed on a newly opened phone or one during/after migration?
  • Are you doing initial data migration on WiFi or on a mobile network? What’s the connectivity like?
  • If hot, how hot? Warm to touch, very hot like a kettle boiling.
  • What’s the elapsed time of usage before you notice this issue?
  • Are there visible messages on the phone indicating a temperature or other warning.

Otherwise all we read are complaints. And anyway Apple is aware of these issues and are working with 3rd party vendors and to resolve OS related issues in a future OS release.

I am not a troll. I’ve had my iPhone 15 PM since 9/24 and whenever I am on a phone call the phone starts to heat up and the battery drops about 1% per minute. Apple even addressed that there is an issue that will be fixed in late October on iOS 17.1. Indexing should be done. I have factory reset my phone without restoring from backup and I am still having this issue. I have had every iPhone except the 12 and 14 and never experienced this before

I was an early complainer on this forum regarding the over heating. It was disconcerting after waiting to upgrade and when I did I was confronted with a hot potato. I typically wait but ordered presale to get it soon. The first week it over heated without me doing anything or anything of note that should cause over heating like a game. Battery life was short and this left me thinking of leveraging the 14 day return policy.

Now into my second week the phone is no longer heating up and the battery life is what I expected. I had apps to update automatically in the background so that may of been the cause and solution. Feeling much better now the phone has stabilized and I don't feel like I am going to be stuck with an early manufacturing flaw.

I hope your post helps others as it's great when someone who was concerned comes back to say what happened after a week or so.

Are you seeing a message on your screen saying the phone needs to cool down? If no, your phone isn't overheating. iPhone has sophisticated circuitry built in to protect the phone from temperatures, which exceed its normal operating range. And if the phone exceeds that temperature, you'll see a warning on the screen and thermometer symbol. That is the only time one could say their iPhone legitimately overheated.

If you are concerned however, have Apple test your phone. We can't really do much as users here on a user to user only forum to effect any change for you.

I have NEVER advised anyone to not post here, nor have I ever suggested people should stop sharing their experience, so please don't put words in my mouth I never said. All I have tried to tell people is if they are concerned about their phone, they should take their phone to Apple as opposed to complaining to other users on a user to user only forum where Apple doesn't actively participate. Of course it's not good to have a phone which is too hold to hold. And if someone does, they should do something about it besides complaining here.

What people seem to take exception with is the definition of "overheating." An iPhone which is really overheating would say it needs to cool down and show a thermometer on the screen. That is truly overheating. And many are not seeing that, yet suggesting a warm or perhaps to them, a hot phone is overheating.

I have NEVER had any heating issues or battery issues on either our iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. Not out of the box, so the update Apple released in iOS 17.0.3 didn't change that for me as again, no heating issues. But if I had had heating issues, the first thing I would have done is go to Apple with my phone.

If you believe everyone is having this issue enough to make you want to cancel your order, that's unfortunate. Everyone is most definitely NOT having such issues. I now know many with an 15 Pro model. None of them are having ANY issues whatsoever. They're actually terrific phones.

Take care.

That's not the case.

I was using my iPhone 15 Pro Max(on 17.0.3) in direct sunlight with ambient around 90F(32 Deg C). Direct sunlight pushed the brightness to max and screen started getting warm. Checked some emails and sent a couple of text messages, brightness started to reduce (screen & side frames got hot). Finally, I took 5-6 snaps using native Camera App (even back got very hot). All this under 5 mins of screen time. At this point, the phone got so hot that the brightness reduced significantly, refresh rate went down heavily and scroll became jittery and lagging (Pro-Motion became Slow-Motion); and Battery drained like an open tap. I could feel the heat ooze out even from Spigen Clear Case.

GUESS WHAT! NO OVERHEATING POP UP WAS THERE.

So, stop hypothesizing that Apple knows everything and they have highly sensitive circuitry to detect heating and they won't cut corners to maximize profits. I repeated several scenarios side by side with my iPhone 14 Pro Max, every time iPhone 15 Pro Max ended up getting significantly hotter.

I have been buying iPhones(Plus/Pro Maxes) for past 7 years now, all on launch day. Something is not right, this time.

Taking it to Genius Bar/Service Centre will be useless as it is unlikely that I will be given an instant replacement. Will wait for 17.1 and stock situation to ease out and approach Apple for replacement.

Really disappointed.

And Guess What? (though it needs certain amount of .... to acknowledge), an iPhone 14 Pro at the same instance under the same conditions neither drastically reduce brightness nor its Pro-Motion became slow motion or drained battery and became only slightly warm. Later, I tested the under the similar conditions with my 1-Year-old iPhone 14 Pro Max, to arrive at same conclusion.

Something is not right with iPhone 15 PM. Take 4-5 macro shots in quick succession without sun, even then iPhone 15 PM suffers a sunstroke.

I'm not sure why you feel you need to argue your concern with me? If you are concerned about your iPhone, which clearly you are, you are doing the right thing by taking it to the Genius Bar at your Apple Store. That's good and I hope they help you, if only to make you less concerned about your iPhone, or if found to be defective, replace it.

You can't by the way, compare iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 15 Pro. They are completely different devices and the new 3nm chip in it is not the same chip used in any iPhone previously.

Mine is heating up just listening to music

Yes, as lobsterghost1 explained, streaming music will cause your phone to heat up. Unless the phone gets so hot you can't hold it or you get a warning on the screen that says it's shutting down, what you're seeing is probably quite normal. Playing games is also another activity that tends to generate heat.

Nov 8, 2023 11:30 AM in response to lobsterghost1

I mentioned previously but wanted to again.

I had issues with my 15 pro max getting hot, never had the warning come on, but you could tell it was not normal. Mine did it most when talking on the phone for over 5 min.

About a week and half after activating it and getting it set up it was better. No heating up like it was when on a call, the battery is better, etc.

I know it has been mentioned - but anyone that uses a cell phone knows that at times it heats up - when charging, excessive use, etc. But I have never had any phone until this one have a problem with heating up to the point it is almost to hot to handle. But now it’s fine. Whether it was that the phone finally got all squared away after being set up or the software update did it - but it is working better than my 13 Pro Max that I had.
