iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

New iPhone Overheating:

Being a new iPhone, did you eat up all the storage, already? If little space remains on the iPhone, things can overheat.

Troubleshooting an Overheating iPhone:

Perform the following:

I. Cool Down the iPhone:

For a few hours, perform the following...

  • Power Off: the iPhone for a bit
  • Unplug: any Cables
  • Place it Atop: Laptop Cooler
  • Keep it in: an open space
  • Keep it Out of: direct sunlight

then...

2. Clear Space Using my User Tips:

See if you need to clear lots of space. System resources may be using up too much services, making it overheat. Internal storage cannot be upgraded. It is what it is. So, the maximum internal storage capacity never increases, even if you upgraded your iCloud plan. Learn More here: What's the Difference Between Device Storage and iCloud Storage? Apple Support

So, what to do...

Purchased phone last week, It is getting hot even after 17.1.1 , even without usage, the charging stops with a msg “charging will start after phone lowers temperature “

feel frustrated, and cheated… this is a hardware issue and Apple is covering up. Why sell such a costly phone when you have such a major defect. Not acceptable !!

It's called discussion to see how wide-spread the problem is. Honestly, I expect that the Genius Bar will run their diagnostics on it and tell me that it's totally fine, because everything works. It just gets really hot while it's working. If it's only my phone, then I'll just return it while I'm still in my return period and get another one. If it's everyone's phones and getting another one won't fix the problem, then I'll have to think about what my other options are (probably returning it and going back to my 12 Pro for another year, good thing I didn't do that trade-in yet...).

This is not a new iPhone issue. I’ve had my phone since September 2023. Last night, I was away from home and I turned on the Alexa app on my iPhone and let Brown Noise play for about 3 1/2 hours. My phone was so hot, that It burned my hand. It got hot and the temperature light turned on charging in my car for about 45 minutes driving the other day. I had to hold it outside in frigid weather to let it cool off to use my gps app. None of my previous iPhones have ever done that in such a short period of time, it would take hours for them to get warm on the inside car charger. This is a problem directly related to this phone. For knowledge base, I buy a the newest Pro or Pro Max every year and have been an iPhone/Apple user since the first iPhone

Yes, I've read every post. But my comment about the phone heating up while charging wasn't directly at you or anything you've posted. It was directed at dhrijyoti who seemed concerned their phone was getting warm while being charged. And it's normal for a phone to warm while being charged.

If you think there is an issue with your new phone, instead of complaining on a user to user only forum, schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and let Apple run diagnostics on it. We can't test your phone. And continuing to express concern here on this forum is going to get you nothing.

I personally faced this problem too, and here are some things that I did to solve it:

  • I updated my iOS to the latest version, which is iOS 17.0.4. Apple has released this update to address the overheating bug in iOS 17.
  • I turned off some of the features that I don’t use often, such as location servicesbackground app refresh, and Siri suggestions. These features can consume a lot of battery and CPU power, which can cause the phone to heat up.
  • Avoided using or charging the phone in direct sunlight or in very hot environments. Excessive heat can damage the battery and the internal components of the phone.
  • Cleaned the charging port and the speakers of the phone with a soft cloth or a cotton swab. Sometimes, dust or debris can block the airflow and prevent the phone from cooling down properly.

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

"Hey, if you don’t mind me asking what is indexing?"

Indexing is pretty much what it sounds like... it's your phone going through all of its content (media, email, messages, etc.) and creating an index so that when you search, it can quickly find all of the content that matches your search. If it didn't do this, searching would take a lot longer.

This happens when you get a new phone, and periodically after iOS updates when something changes that requires it. It can be pretty processor intensive, which means that your battery will go down faster and your phone may get warmer when it happens. Depending on how much content you have, it can take several days for it to go through everything. Once it's done, your battery life should get better and the temperature should go down.

All of that said, as I mentioned in my previous post, what I'm experiencing with my 15 Pro seems a little extreme to me to be indexing alone. I've never had indexing cause this much heat on any of my previous iPhones.

Same here. I noticed it on day 1, it was very noticeably hot after only minutes of using. It cools down when I lock it and set it down and then gets hot after just a couple of minutes. I only have 44GB used out of 256GB so I find it hard to believe that it’s indexing still. Mine before this was the 11 and I never had that issue even after an hour of use. My husband also got the 15 PM and he was even pretty taken back by how hot mine was. He mentioned it to me without me even saying it. He’s not experiencing this with his. It’s uncomfortably hot

This is called Apple Support "Communities." It really isn't a discussion forum. It is where users can ask other users for technical support. And users, if they can offer support provide it. Complaining over and over accomplishes nothing. I've offered things you can try. If you tried them and they didn't help, then contact Apple directly and have your phone tested.

Or keep complaining, which won't help you in any way.
