iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

Out of curiosity, when was everyone’s phone manufactured? From friends, I’ve noticed those of us with a Pro or Pro Max built in August 2023 have this issue. The ones built in July 2023 seem to be fine.

of course this is a small sample size, but makes me wonder if something changed with the manufacturing process (thermal paste for the processor per se).

just curious.

Mine is August 2023(Pro Max 512GB). Great battery life and it doesn’t get warm for any compute intensive stuff - camera, streaming etc. It was warm/hot during initial days due to iCloud restore and Photos running in the background but that’s expected.

And mine was manufactured in July 2023 and I have no issues with my 15 Pro Max. So in this sampling of two, July or August doesn't make any difference.

Hello everyone,

I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max one terabyte black titanium model from Verizon. It was pre-ordered on September 16, and I received it on September 27, 2023. I am a voiceover user due to the fact that I am legally blind. I think some people are confused with voiceover, and voice control. They are too totally different things. I have voiceover on almost 24 seven and I’m not having any overheating issues with my phone. I’ve not tried the voice control feature yet, so I’m not sure if that has something to do with everybody’s issue. I also noticed that when my phone was first setting up, it did get warm, however, I did not transfer any data from an iCloud backup and did not have the same issues days later.

also, last night I was on a group FaceTime audio call for hours, and did not experience. Any overheating of my iPhone.

my phone was manufactured in August 2023 and the battery was first used September 2023. It currently has two charge cycles. I have optimized battery charging on, and I’m debating on whether or not to try the 80% limit or just keep it on optimized charging.

i’ve also been on this thread for hours, and did not experience a significant battery percentage drop. My phone is also not warmed to the touch. I have it in a case as well.

like others have mentioned, it seems like there’s a lot of indexing going on while trying to perform various high processing features at the same time, which is causing the phone to overheat, or get very warm or hot to touch. I would just let things settle down and see if it continues. If it does, definitely return your phone to Apple or your carrier.

Maybe you should read a few posts above your post and you'll see why this happened and why it was NOT necessary to return your phone. But you did and I guess that's that. Too bad though, as you gave up a great phone, which will work perfectly when the apps are optimized correctly to work with A17 chip, which they clearly weren't. And since they aren't Apple products, that wasn't on Apple to make right, but as you can read, Apple is working with the app developers you refer to to get them to work with the A17 chip. Again, your loss.

Maybe you should re-read my post carefully, I tried two phones with same result, an oven not only using Instagram and blah, blah, blah, but on 10 minutes call, recording less than 5 minutes 4k 60 fps video..., and essentially I did nothing but using the smartphone normally, if you think a premium phone that it cost more than 1300 bucks must heat up the point you can't hold it, and to wait if Apple can fix it, ok it´s your opinion, but not mine, so I took my decision to return it twice, I wanted an iphone, not a oven.

I have not lost anything, rather I lost if I did not return it, so instead of losing, I won.

Shame on apple for this launching.

Maybe you should read a few posts up to see that Apple has formally acknowledged the issue and will soon be releasing an update, along with helping those app developers whose apps were causing issues with the A17 chip. I get you're mad and you returned two phones. Neither of the phones are likely defective and had you just had some patience, Apple, along with the app developers are going to solve this.

But you didn't have patience and you gave up on your phone, which with some time would have been a great device. Good for you. Hope whatever you choose instead is good for your needs.

What you were doing is actually DANGEROUS and Apple released a statement months ago (long before the new phones were released) to NEVER charge your phone under a pillow. If you think this is due to iPhone 15, you are mistaken.

Charging ANY cell phone under a pillow is dangerous and should NOT be done. EVER. Batteries need to be charged in a well ventilated area.

Thats incorrect! 15Pro and 15Pro Max has overheating flaws and its not for SOME, its FOR ALL. Are you suggesting that the Iphones were not throughly tested before production. No other phones have overheating issues and they can be dangerous regardless charged under a pillow or in hand of a toddler. I was at Apple Store and they were saying they were receiving a lot of return requests.

Well as I mentioned, it was working totally fine before, no heating whatsover. Its only since I added the eSIM, used it over 5G, and used a higher power charger that it's started acting up. I didn't restore from backup or anything before this. So to me it feels like its a power management / mobile data issue. But still, no harm in trying a full reset.

Totally with you. I felt the same. Just because we are new to this forum doesn't mean we are new to Apple family. I myself have been using iPhone for years and never came on to the forum as I never experienced such an issue before. The only reason we are here is because the issue is REAL and it's not something we expected such a high-end phone to have. And yes some of the attitude from high level members have been very frustrating (basically telling all those people who are having this issue that this is not an issue and its us who are not using the phone right. Ridiculous)

i have notice the overheating issue in a while using a few apps...

The most important to me is facetime (i use it a lot), just a few seconds after being on a facetime call it gets really hot, to the point i have to switch hands every minute to let it cold down. (my hand).

other apps i notice:

  • Snapseed.
  • Instagram

It’s quite interesting to see there’s complaints about ‘iPhone 14 pro max and iPhone 14 Pro overheating after iOS 17 update’, like the overheating problem was related to the new OS rather than the new iphone

That's not so unusual. After every iOS update we often see reports of people saying their iPhone battery is depleting faster or their phone is running warmer than normal.
