iPhone 15 overheating

Hi everyone. I’ve recently purchased the new iPhone 15 pro max and it is heating up even when I’m not using it.

I was wondering if anyone else is having this issue or if it maybe a setting that is causing it that I can turn off?

Any advice is appreciated. :)

For all of you:

Do a simple Forced Restart on your new iPhone by:

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Then immediately press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Then immediately press and KEEP HOLDING the side power button and KEEP HOLDING it past the swipe to shut down and KEEP HOLDING it until the Apple Logo appears, then let go

Sign back in with your passcode when the phone prompt you and let the phone settle down over the next couple days. If you transferred a LOT of data, it can days for the indexing process to complete. There is likely NOTHING wrong with your phones.

Read back, there's a fix to download or maybe if you have so many problems and you are not able to deal with it, instead of posting here where nobody's reading this anymore make an appointment to an Apple Store and have it tested. I see you have also problems with the font size of a newsgroup, maybe you just need a less sophisticated smartphone that is easier to manage

It´s seems after IOS 17.0.3 release people suffering heating issues still remains the same, in my opinion the first batch of mobile phones were launched without enough quality control in the production of the new chip, and this issue is imposible to address by software unless throttling CPU & GPU, so make sense that some people doesn´t suffer heating issues and others do, is a kind of lottery, unfortunately the affected devices that has been produced so far will remain as it is without much option for improvement.

I returned my iPhone 15 pro and in my case I took the best decision.

How hot when charging? It is 100% normal for an iPhone to get warm when being charged. 100% normal.

Hello All

Just wanted to share that even after 17.0.3 update, the heating problem while charging is still there. I dont feel there is any improvement, I am not using any case while charging and there is no app running either. Iphone 15 is quite hot between 30-70% charge.

I use Apple 20 watt USB-C charger, using the cable which came with the phone, not using any wireless charger.

Since I found it to be getting hot, I always remove the case for better heat dissipation while charging.

I also do not hold and generally not use it, however just keep checking it if it is getting too warm. It was ok till 36% but when I checked again at 54% it was quite hot, thereafter at around ~ 70% I found warmness is somewhat at 36% level, no problem after 75%. I generally charge it till 80% only.

It helps, because people will found this thread and see they are not alone (that is the feeling finally one can get from the unicelular messages that comes for the blind Apple fanboys that lucky of them have a phone without problems), so they will go to Apple in the terms they will take in consideration because this is something to take in consideration, more in a kind of phone is not cheap and must pass all the quality process that looks this hot-warm-phones was passed without not too much care.

That helps. And yes they must take the phone to evaluation or return.

I read all the pages of this post and personally I find some of the repeated advice to not post here as “it does not help anyone” very fishy and somewhat biased. I follow this post and am sure a lot of members do too whether current or would be owners of 15P / 15PM. I have cancelled my order for 15PM as I would never accept paying such an amount for a device which isn’t at least as efficient as the previous model and as efficient & powerful as advertised. Running hotter than it should regardless of your definition of whatever “overheating” means it is not efficient and battery life is affected. Heat loss = battery life loss. My definition of overheating is when the handset runs warm enough to become uncomfortable to hold for reasonably long periods of time when touching either face or hands and laggy during operation which does not necessarily have to lead to it shutting down due to it reaching your level of “overheating”. I wish they would resolve the issue without reducing the performance but to be honest I don’t think they will be able to so the posts here help me decide if I should still be hopeful or wait until next September. Please stop advising members to stop sharing their experiences, this is a forum and all members are here to learn from others’ experiences so they can judge accordingly. I agree with going to Apple if all technical advice was followed and still unhappy, the more handsets are returned the more active Apple shall become in resolving this issue if not for this model then at least for the Iphone 16 models.

It's not charging although yes, if you add charging - which heats the phone, there's no way around that - to another overheating issue, then it will overheat completely and shut down.

That makes sense. Also in hot weather, sunlight, etc... issue will be worse.

The actual bug has to do with some software/hardware interaction that is intermittent and a bit hard to track down. We don't know yet.

I think it has a problem for sure, and yes, this forum would be more helpful to everyone if it left everyone to simply share their experience, whether the experience is good or bad.

Especially in a case like this, I am gathering information and trying to figure out which combination of factors makes the CPU / GPU overheat.

The phone can run games and do amazing stuff while staying cool so it's not that the A17 pro is just a bad processor or not well designed - it's a bug that is intermittent and the more information we can put together the better we - and also Apple - can figure out how to work around it.

PS: I already bought thephone and in this country there's no Apple stores and returns are impossible. But even if I was in the US I wouldn't return it just yet - I think they will fix this within 1 - 2 months.

Yes absolutely.

This isn't about the phone getting so hot that it shuts down.

It gets unusually hot for no reason which obviously also impacts battery life rather severely.

I'd imagine people here having enough tech knowledge to know when a phone is overheating vs not.

Let's say I use a normal app normally, like scrolling through and chatting on Whatsapp - the phone should not get hot from this. If it does get hot, something is seriously wrong. And my battery life will be minimal.

If I use a game, of course the phone will get hot that's expected.

I would think everyone here knows this, feeling-wise, what kind of activity can be expected to use a lot of CPU/GPU and what doesnt. This function is at the core of the excellent battery life we see with phones today, without that, the battery would last a few hours tops, this is very very important.

And Guess What? (though it needs certain amount of .... to acknowledge), an iPhone 14 Pro at the same instance under the same conditions neither drastically reduce brightness nor its Pro-Motion became slow motion or drained battery and became only slightly warm. Later, I tested the under the similar conditions with my 1-Year-old iPhone 14 Pro Max, to arrive at same conclusion.

Something is not right with iPhone 15 PM. Take 4-5 macro shots in quick succession without sun, even then iPhone 15 PM suffers a sunstroke.

Heaven forbid Lobsterghost1,

While in that cave he/she would marvel over the wonder of a mobile phone made by Apple and check those messages / snaps and what not, to return to the world a modern (wo)man.

I, by the way, seem to have difficulties seeing real advice coming my way whenever you write something.

By the way I am sure Apple users would like to use their devices anywhere around the world (aka outside their homes/shopping centers).

You're absolutely right. Users should be able to use their iPhone outside their homes. But in some cases, such as using ones phone in directly sunlight, especially, if the ambient temperature might be hot or warm as it can be be in many locations, they should expect their phone to protect itself, if it starts to get hot, by lowering the brightness on the screen. That is normal and expected iPhone behavior. You simply can't avoid the phone getting hot in some cases.

But, if it gets hot, unusually hot, the phone should be tested by Apple to ensure there is nothing wrong with the phone.

I activated my IPhone 15 pro max on Oct 15. Over the course of the next week+ I noticed the battery was not great and when taking a call my phone would heat up.

I am not sure what changed but the last couple days my phone is not heating up on a call and my battery have improved. I made no changes to settings during this time.

I know when you switch phones it takes time for the new one to “settle” - download everything and finish set up - so maybe that was what was going on for me.

I don’t know if anyone else has had improvement after a few days or week, but I sincerely hope this means mine ironed itself out - crossing fingers.
