iOS 17 - Missing Shared Albums in Photos

After updating our iPad Pro to iPadOS 17 , the Shared Albums were not showing (only My Album). After checking Settings -> iCloud -> Photos, we noticed that Shared Albums was off. It keeps going off even after we switch it on.

Shared Albums was also off in Settings -> Photos -> Shared Albums.

After switching it on, it still didn’t show. Logged out of the iCloud and signed back in. Shared Albums is now on but all the Shared Albums are missing. On devices that the albums were shared with, the AppleID still shows up as the owner of the Shared Album and the other people still have access to it.

Would really like to get back access to my 40+ Shared Albums that we use for work.

Anyone have this issue, a fix or a workaround?

Hello FrauCa,

Yes, I am a teacher in an Apple Distinguished School too (Japan). Updating to 17.1 has kept Shared Albums on and made it available in the Photos app but the old Shared Albums are not showing up. They are still there as I can access them on another iPad running iPadOS 16.x

I am in ongoing communication with Apple Support over the past few weeks and the ticket is slowly escalating up to engineering. In the meantime we have held off updating our students’ iPad to 17.

It seems to only affect Managed Apple IDs.

Would be up for staying connected but not sure how to reach you personally.

Hi,

thanks for explaining my problems. I’m a primary teacher in an apple distinguished school from germany and used the Shared Albums in every class.

I see from your screenshot that you have schoolwork: Are you a teacher or pupil and is your iPad a managed one?

I thought the Shared Albums would appear again and it would fix itself after all pupils have updated on iPadOS 17 their iPads. But that didn‘t happen.

While some pupils and collegues can see my Shared Albums I still can‘t see my Shared Albums and additionaly they don’t appear on iCloud.com.

Yet on an old MacBook Pro with macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7 I found them this morning. :-D

Hope it get‘s fixed my Teacher-iPad soon.

Hello Erwin.Cha,

thanks for your answer. Good to know, that it IS a problem with Shared iPads.

And good to know, that you can still post photos from iPads, which haven‘t been updated yet.

So I will try to get an old Shared iPad, which hasn‘t updated until now, and login there. At least I can see the old Albums with many projects.

Just sad, that my pupils won‘t see the Shared Albums, because they already updated.

Since this morning I see Shared Albums in Photos again, but sadly there is none of my old ones, as it is on icloud.com.

I hope, Apple hasn‘t deleted them.

I will keep you up to date.

For now, let us stay connected here.

Greetings to Japan.

Shared Albums is turned on. My laptop died a few days ago. I was so thankful that I had backed up my laptop faithfully into iCloud. However I was unable to bring iCloud data to new iPad Pro without first updating iPad Pro to 17.2

i updated iPad Pro.

Now are we being told that all of our shared albums are no longer accessible?! My daughter’s wedding photos. Birth of my grandson. Renovation of historic house. Move into new home. No way to get these back?

Thank you for sharing what worked for you. Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me.

Shared Albums is turned on, and stays on, even after restarting.

I no longer see any of my Shared Albums prior to the date of updating the iOS to 17. Sadly when my laptop died, I purchased a new iPad Pro and attempted to load it with my backup from iCloud. It would not load until I updated my brand new iPad Pro to iOS 17. Then … All went well, except I lost my Shared Albums created prior to that date.

Frustrating and sad. Any other ideas?
