After updating to iOS 17 apps on my iPhone freeze regularly

I was able to fix all these issues by doing the "Restore iPhone" process on the Mac.

It backed everything up, installed a fresh copy of iOS, and then restored my user data and settings. All app freezes are fixed for me now.

This was happening to me, my iphone 13 was acting up. The problem went away by resetting all settings.

Same issue here, iPhone 13. Doesn’t seem to be happening on the iPad Pro.

Some apps will eventually become responsive, others require a reboot — which then makes other apps unresponsive. Mostly these are Apple apps, Files, Numbers, Notes, Safari, etc.

Some launch to a black screen (my wallpaper?), others seem to launch to the main app screen, but the touch interface doesn’t work. I assume the image on the screen is probably just a screenshot taken when the app was last switched away from, and that’s why it doesn’t respond to touch.

I should have stayed on iOS 15. It worked fine. This is just ridiculous.

Agreed, but it's better than having a non-functional phone.

The entire process only took about 2-3 hours, and I had about 120GB of data backed up.

Phone was restored back to how it was prior as far as data, settings, apps. No manual work required.

Was surprised at how easy it was and did exactly what you'd want.

But yes, should not have even happened in the first place.

It is not your phone, it is the software in your phone. Don’t go buy another phone thinking the problem is with the hardware. Apple is normally reliable with this type of thing. Keep checking for software updates. Perhaps, they will have it fixed soon.

I started to have the same issue here . So often that even writing the replay here took me 2 tries ( so far) closing the browser . It started a couple of weeks ago for me tho ( just crashed 3rd time ) . Before that only on WhatsApp thr typing was freezing and after a few seconds it was continuing without the need of closing the app . I have IPhone 11 Pro , I thought is my battery life (66%) or the older version of the phone or the small memory or that I didn’t do the last software update (I am on 17.4.1 and is asking to update at 17.5 )but I see many people with newer and better devices and same issue . I hope this gets solved, it’s been almost 1 year ..

These third-party app developers may not have updated their apps compatible with the new iOS 17 or iOS 17.0.1.

Same issue with app "Message". Only when I use the notification (clic on it) to open the app

This has been happening to me since right after I updated to iOS 17 in September. No updates have fixed the issue. I have the iPhone 14 Pro. Very frustrating because I should be able to have apps running in the background without having to swipe them away and start over.

The thing is; having to restore your phone and re-sync all your information and data is such a hassle when all we did was update our phones to make them better. 🤷🏻‍♂️

There is also a chance that going the length to do that will not result in a fix.

This just started happening to me. iPhone 14+ with iOS 17.1.2. It has happened on one third-party game and on Apple music. I have plenty of free space on my phone. I back it up and restart it weekly. The problem must be internal to Apple.

As of February, this is still happening. iPhone 13 ProMax with iOS 17.4 and iMessage, Instagram, and Chrome among others will not allow me to type responses..

Not really a fan of a complete wipe and restore but I hope that is not the only solution....

I notice the problem is worse if I have a lot of big apps open, TikTok and Facebook, but it still happens if I close all apps and reboot. It’s at the point where the freezes interrupt my videos and photos when I’m recording clips of my family, this is unacceptable. I don’t know what the phone is doing that it thinks is more important than that, but it’s wrong.
