siri back-to-back requests do not work

I updated my phone to iOS 17 and yet Siri back to back commands do not work for me. I have iPhone SE 2020. should I turn something on in the settings or is it just a temporary problem?

I have experienced the same issue on my iPhone 14 with iOS17. It appears this can happen if you have a specific Accessibility feature enabled on your iPhone. The feature in question is "Type to Siri". If the "Type to Siri" option is enabled, then the back-to-back requests will not work.

To Check if the option is enabled:

Open the Settings app.

Navigate to Accessibility->Siri.

Uncheck the "Type to Siri" option.

This allowed the back to back feature to function. Perhaps Apple needs to document this if it's not already.

Well, I think those of you who've got incompatible hardware are lucky so-and-sos, because I hate this feature and want to turn it off! It's always disappearing what's on-screen before I've had time to read it. Very irritating!

And, yes, this is limited to newer generation devices, per Apple--that's why you're not seeing it work on your much older stuff. They explain in the article on Siri (note the glossary for supported devices for back-to-back requests).

Tragically the option of using type-to-Siri doesn't change this; wait long enough, the text eventually disappears, as though Siri is waiting for a request. Which, of course, it is. But I had hoped that perhaps it would present a workaround, albeit one with extra steps for dictating to Siri.

I think Apple should just give you control over this feature, and explain to users in Settings why they can't have it on older hardware. I want it off, and I can't.
