iPad generation 2 crashed after upgraded to IOS 17.0.0

I upgraded iPad to IOS 17 and it worked okay until when I plugged it in for charging and lock the iPad, it never start again.

I tried everything including pressing start button with home button, it won't start.

I tried iPad recovery mode when plugged in with my iMac, the system recognises my iPad and reported it's restoring iPad. But after a while, like about 10 minutes, the iMac screed reports unknown error (4042). Tried this three times, happened the same.

Apple doesn’t explicitly list error #4042, however, 4000-series errors are often associated with the host computer having difficulties contacting Apple’s servers. Communication difficulties of this nature are often linked with Anti-Virus and/or firewall software running on the host computer.

iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support

While you do so entirely at your own risk, try temporarily disabling your AV/Firewall software - and then repeat your attempt to restore your iPad.

Otherwise, you may need to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom left of this page. Alternatively, if you have access to another Apple device, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

Thank you for your reply. Taking your advice that this might be because of the firewall, I’ve checked my iMac noticing that it didn’t have the firewall on, however, I tried connecting the iPad to MacBook while also turning off firewall as well.

Immediately after connecting to MacBook, the MacBook system report detecting iPad in recovery mode and asked to confirm recovery and restoring iPad. I proceeded, the system download IOS version 16.7. Once completed, it reports attempting to restore iPad with IOS 16.7.

The system ran for a while, after which it report the same unknown error 4042.

I’ve searched the internet and found that this problem with system reporting unknown error 4042 after upgrading IOS happened to many people on various IOS version.

Their solutions were different. Some say it was the battery problem, and after visiting Apple repairs, changing battery, the problem was fixed. Other said, it related to the home touch button, and the repair disconnect Home Touch button and the iPad became functioning again.

I suspect at this point that it may be because of the newer version of IOS manage hardware differently, or requires different hardware, and older models of iPad may not have necessary component to accommodate new version of IOS. In any case, I will try one a couple of more time, or wait until the battery depleted and attempt recovery again.

I am now afraid of updating newer version of any Apple equipments. In the past I upgraded MacBooks, two of them, to newer version as noticed by the system and two of my MacBooks crashed. I took it to Apple authorized repairs, and they change hard drives and both MacBook becomes functioning again. It also happened to my iMac that once I replace hard drive the iMac also works again.

I think Apple should be more responsible and more prudent on any new update.

With this newer version of IOS, I’ve noticed that once the IOS 17 was released, the next day there was an update of IOS 17.0.1. I suspect some oversights that needs immediate upgrade, and I also think that my problems aren’t unique. Apple should take responsibility on crashing Apple Equipments.
