Hello Dio, aren’t you glad you came to Apple forums and found no help at all ? This isn’t my first venture here about my Apple products, which I adore but I have had some frustrating issues about.
I generally don’t complain because it doesn’t do any good. I have found nobody cares at Apple.
I have the exact, same issue. I realize it might be a minor one but it is very curious yet aggrivating one. By looking at my airpod case you would think I work in a coal plant and grind steel I beams for a living. All this black dirty residue from nowhere….always showing up in the exact same spots and no way to clean them. I have used acetone, denatured alcohol….even laquer thinner (on a q-tip) even womens nail files and polishing compound to get it to an acceptable look and 2 weeks later they look grungy as ever…….no clue as to what is happening here….we will never know. I am just glad that I found someone that has the same, stupid issue as me.
PS: My Airpods are generally in a vest pocket and not exposed to black dust.

Hi there Dio_1,
Thank you for posting to Apple Support Communities.
We understand you have a question about how to clean your AirPods.
Clean the case of your AirPods or AirPods Pro
Clean the charging case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If necessary, you can slightly dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol. Allow the charging case to dry. Make sure not to get any liquid in the charging ports. Here are a few more guidelines:
* Remove any debris from the Lightning connector with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush.
* Don't use abrasive materials to clean the charging case.
* To avoid damaging the metal contacts, don't put anything in the charging ports.

That should help.
Take care.
