My apple id is the default user on all of our apple TVs. My wife has been watching lot of stuff that I have no interest in and the recommendations and up next are over run with her shows. Would like to change the user (her apple ID) associated with the default tvos profile and retain the recommendations, up next, etc and start fresh with my ID. Is this possible?

You can’t transfer watch history, recommendations, Up Next, etc. to other accounts. Each account will have its own data for these. You can reset these properties by disabling Use Play History, then enabling again later.
You can have multiple Apple ID accounts on one Apple TV box. That would keep these properties separate for each user, if you remember to switch the activate account to the user that is most interested in the shows being watched.
The default account matters most for iCloud (iCloud Photos) and HomeKit.
