Mail Notifications and more not displaying on watch 10.0.1 and 17.0.1 - BUG

If you want Mail notifications to reliably appear on your apple Watch Ultra and you use gmail or hosted gmail do not upgrade to 10 or 17

I spent almost 5 hours on the phone with Apple support Sunday and to say the least it was frustrating. Here is a summary

To level set everyone currently I have

  • I have a 13 ProMax running 17.0.1
  • I have an Ultra watch running 10.0.1

what I am about to describe worked perfectly on 16.6.1 (phone) an 9.6.2 (20U90) (watch) a

My issues after upgrade are below

Note:

Apple mail app was used for testing all other mail programs were removed or closed

All Diagnostics passed on phone and watch

When I use the word "hosted" below it means I have that service with a custom domain name.

  • Notifications are random and were often delayed for 25-30 minutes if they came at all and when they did come it was just with a beep (most of the time they never came at all)
  • Notification on the phone were alos delayed and would not appear until the apple mail applicaiton was opened on the phone.
  • If Notification came to watch, I received I only tone, no haptic no Notification on the watch
  • the problem was worse when sending O365 email -> gmail see detail below

O365 (hosted) -> Hotmail ... would beep, no haptic, Notification would appear 10-20% of the time

O365 (hosted) -> gmail (hosted)... no beep, no haptic, no notification

O365 (hosted) -> pop email ... no beep, no haptic, no notification

Gmail (hosted) -> Hotmail ... would beep, no haptic, no Notification would not appear

Other things

  • At some point text messages were not displaying on the watch. We got that working by force shutdown of phone and watch (not pretty). We never figured out what caused that because it Magically started to work :(

  • Weather app would not update. Al it would give me weather for was Cupertino and New York and that was by touching the complication on the watch. the watch face just displayed "--" At some point I got a message on the watch, about resetting my 911 location and after that, the weather app appeared to work.

  • Before the upgrade the watch would charge to around 75% and only charge to 100% if I chose to do that. After the upgrade the watch ALWAYS charges to 100%

  • Before the upgrade when I took the watch off, and put it on the charger the screen would Dim but stay on (night stand mode is turned on) After the upgrade, when I put it on the charger in 10 -20 seconds the screen turns off.

In my 5 hours call with Apple suport I:

  • I reset/wiped the watch NOT restoring backup No change in behavior

  • They wanted me to wipe/ reset the phone but because of some applications that would take a long time to re-configure I told them I could not do that

Bottom line:

If you depend on notifications, I would not upgrade the watch and phone! I depend on notifications that is why I purchased the Ultra watch 2 months ago, so I could get my business emails if I have my phone or not. After the upgrade, this does not work, so now I have left the apple watch at home and have gone back to my good ole Rolex until the problem can be fixed if it ever is. Right now I feel as though I have wasted $900

hour later update LOL:

13 pro, 17.1.2

iwatch ultimate 10.1.1 as of today.

So, i have the blue mail icon and two accounts coming in just fine now. However, the icon was not there earlier when my gmail was getting hung up needing my password again after a hard reset of the phone to get the SIM working on cell service again. As soon as i fixed my gmail in the phone, the icon just appeared, which is odd because my other work email was working in the phone but no mail icon was on the watch, until i fixed the gmail account in the phone settings.

make sure all your email accounts are working properly in the phone i guess.

Same here, experienced just as you described having just updated my phone to 17 the other day (which f'kd the sim in the phone / no cell service, until i did a full hard factory reset and restore from backup.... such BS lately). Made mistake of bumping the watch ios to 10 and see the little blue mail icon is gone.... W T F ?!
