Gmail notifications stopped working on my Apple Watch Series 9

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting on these boards and I will try to include as much info as I can for clarity and for any help you can offer.

I was running iOS 18.5 on my iPhone 14 Max Pro (and I'm not sure what iOS on my Apple Watch 9) when I quit getting notified of new email from Gmail. (It's important to note that I was trying to get GMAIL notifications -- not from the Apple Mail app.) I did all the usual things to troubleshoot -- reboots of both, upgraded to iOS 26 on both iPhone and Watch. I ran through all of the settings that were recommended to make Gmail alerts go to the Watch. Everything looks right on my iPhone in Settings (notifications) and the Apple Watch app. I'm getting other notifications fine. So, I'm not sure if the problem is on Google's end or Apple's. I did update my Gmail app on my phone after upgrading to iOS 26. So here are the things I know I checked:

  1. Do not Disturb mode -- OFF (also not in Airplane Mode or Cinema mode)
  2. Notifications on in
  3. iPhone Settings > Notifications > Gmail ON // Settings > Notifications > Mail (allow notifications ON // Watch > Notifications > Mail (custom, NOT mirroring iPhone --allow notifications ON, Gmail On, Primary On) // Watch > Mirror iPhone Alerts from Gmail = ON
  4. Wrist Detection: ON
  5. My Gmail settings allow notifications, and I have badges on but sound off. I've always had sound off -- I just want haptics when I get a new email in my primary inbox
  6. Sounds & Haptics: Play in Silent Mode (iPhone setting)
  7. Watch Sounds & Haptics: silent mode was off. Turned on just to test it -- still don't get haptic alert with new Gmail.
  8. Watch Sounds & Haptics: haptics are "default" and not "off."

I think that covers what I've checked in all of my settings. What could I be missing? This was working up until recently & I can't figure out if the problem is a bug with Gmail, or something with my Apple settings, a bug with Apple... Please help. Thanks!

For anyone that might stumble across this and need help, I resolved the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the Gmail app on my iPhone. It had somehow gotten glitchy with the phone which meant notifications couldn't go to my watch. After I reinstalled it, I reset my notifications and they started working on my phone again. Then tweaked some more settings on the watch app and now notifications also go to my watch.

Update (is anyone reading this?):

I finally just did a full reset of my watch and started it as new. I set everything up as it should be and received maybe two email notifications (from the Mail app, not Gmail) and not from my primary inbox (which is what I wanted -- not junk promotions and updates). Now I see I'm getting a couple Mail notifications in my watch's notification center, even though I have it OFF. It shouldn't be sending notifications there at all.

My watch's sound is off (by choice) but I do get haptics for phone calls and other apps. Just not mail. Apple's Mail seems really screwed up since the upgrade.

Thank you so much. I'm glad you got it working for you! Unfortunately, I didn't get it to work for me. I did have "Primary Only" selected so I changed that to "All Mail" -- I wasn't notified when I sent myself a couple of test emails.

When it worked, the haptic would buzz my watch and I'd see a new Gmail on the screen. (Not the mail app icon, but it said Gmail.) Then that just quit working entirely.

I made sure I have notifications on in the Gmail app on the phone and then went into the watch app and made sure that mirror my iPhone is on. It already was, but I toggled it off and back on anyway.

It's possible that it's an issue with the Gmail app, but it's also quite possible it's on Apple's side. Or possibly both. And Apple and Google aren't exactly friends so... :(

I can't imagine there is a setting I still have set wrong at this point. I feel like I have checked every setting there is on the iPhone's settings, Gmail app's settings, Apple Watch settings (on the phone and the watch itself). Maybe it really is some sort of OS glitch.

Question for you: on your watch, do you get the Gmail notification, or is it an Apple Mail notification that's connected to your Gmail account?
