With the iOS 17 update, my eSIM disappeared

I updated to iOS 17, and one of the first things I noticed when turning my phone back on was the little "SOS" in the top corner. I checked my cellular settings and my eSIM was gone. I'm currently trying to see if my carrier can restore it, but it seems like an Apple bug that I'm asking my carrier to patch up.

it looked like my eSIM number had disappeared after the ios17 update (as I’ve been using a physical sim for a couple months abroad). So I went to Settings > Cellular > Sims selected the eSIM and turned it on. After that, things started working.

Hope that helps

Update on disappearing eSIM after 17.1 update:

I blamed my carrier, I blamed the Apple update… and I got nothing but great help in chat and phone calls from both Optimum and Apple, and it turns out my iPhone 14 Max Pro suffered a catastrophic HARDWARE Fry.

That it occurred immediately following the update, the Apple genius told me it was possible the update may have triggered or pushed the hardware “over the edge”.

It’s a $200 replacement and very luckily it fell 6 days inside the end of my one year warranty.

This is a first for iPhone… and I doubt most of you others with “disappearing eSims” are having the same problem, fingers crossed.

The problem is that if you don't have an esim, you can't call your provider. Or if you try to sign in online, it can't verify because you don't have an number anymore. So, this isn't a great solution. Finally, if you have a US based esim/carrier and live or are travelling abroad, you cannot physically visit a location which is the work around that the carriers suggest. So, it's a pretty big problem. However, there is one mysterious thing that has worked on both my phone and my father's phone after about 4 hours of calls to apple. Switch on flight mode. Then switch it off and sometimes.... it magically reappears. Until it disappears again. But as sketchy as that is and feels like walking on egg shells. It's worked 3 times.

Hello morning_smith,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. For this issue, we'd recommend the following which is from the related article, If you see 'invalid SIM' or 'no SIM' on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.

1. Make sure that you have an active plan with your wireless carrier.
2. Restart your iPhone or iPad.
3. Check for a carrier settings update. Go to Settings > General > About. If an update is available, you'll see a prompt to select OK or Update.
4. If your device has an eSIM, contact your carrier.
5. If your device has a physical SIM card, remove your iPhone SIM card or iPad SIM card from the SIM card tray and then put the SIM card back. Make sure that the SIM tray closes completely and isn’t loose. If you use a SIM tray from a different model iPhone, iPad, or from another phone manufacturer, it might not fit properly.
6. If your device has a physical SIM card and you've completed the previous step, try using another SIM card. If you don't have one, go to your carrier's retail store and ask them to test with another SIM card. You might need to replace your SIM card.

All the best.

After auto update to 17.1.1 iOS, my iPhone 14 Max Pro no longer has CELL CONNECTIVITY.

Oh No!! A Phone with no phone service????

I've been on the real phone texting via internet with Optimum for a total of 5 hours and NO SUCCESS.

Cannot delete the eSIM (death spin "Removing", cannot Activate a New eSIM death spin "Activating"), tried resetting all eSims, tried resetting Network settings, the iPhone recognizes NO CARRIER but claims the Carrier Sim is Locked, which I suppose is what they do if you buy the phone on time from the carrier/service provider so you can't split before the phone is paid for.

APPLE!!!

LISTEN UP!!!!!

YOU screwed this up.

FIX IT!!!

Just updated to 17.1.1 on iPhone XR (don't come for me; I know it's an old phone), but now my eSIM won't work either.

I also have a physical SIM, which was OFF because I'm abroad... and despite what the screen said (i.e., physical SIM off, eSIM on), I received an SMS and A CALL on my physical SIM that wasn't even supposed to be connected!!!!!

My eSIM won't connect to the network at all, even though just a few short hours ago, everything was working splendidly. All the settings are normal – it's unlocked, I've restarted, turned airplane mode on/off, etc., so this definitely feels like a bug with the new update.

(I also had to remove the physical SIM because I'm Canadian, and roaming charges cost more than rent.)

This is super not cool, Apple... not cool at all. I'm travelling solo and need a working eSIM for my literal safety.
