iPhone 15 Pro Max Back Glass Durability

Hello, I’m interested in purchasing an iPhone 15 pro max, I have seen online that this model breaks very easily (back glass breaks with minimal pressure- JerryRigsEverything video). Has anyone else experienced this?

I disagree.

In his videos, he compared it to the iPhone 14, same tests. Significant difference in durability. In fact, the 14 did not break and with more pressure.

Yes, it was deliberately destroyed, 1 test at a time… I’m unaware how else you’d test durability. However, the first test was the back glass. The rest of the tests followed, and most praised.

A LOT of other videos have emerged as well. Popular Mac forums have published articles too. Same observations, and more with the camera falling off after a decent fall. Never in the history of iPhones has this happened, under extreme falls (Off Rooftops).

Pure speculation; I believe it’s a design flaw related to the back glass now being removable, and it will probably be fixed on the iPhone 16.

OP:

If you still get the 15… you’ll probably like it. But take extra precautions. Like a lanyard 😂.

My opinion, find an iPhone 14. It will cost less, performance comparisons are negligible (see tests online), and it has superior durability.

“The normal elasticity of stainless steel is 200 GPa, whereas titanium’s is 115 GPa. Because most of its alloys are more elastic, stainless steel often beats titanium in this area. Again, more flexibility makes it easier to mill stainless steel and make different parts.”

Indeed the frame is aluminium, but the titanium is what the glass is in contact with, and the fused titanium increases overall frame rigidity.

It’s all speculation on my part of course. I’m no engineer. But it could explain how the regular 15 glass doesn’t break despite being easily replaceable.

Ah, my mistake. That makes sense, Jerry did mention tensile stress between the glass and frame too, so it is a little confusing with how the different materials interact. That's very useful information too, thank you for those references!

Would be interesting to know why the glass does break when the regular 15 Pro doesn't, nor the 15/Plus. Either way, I wouldn't imagine it's a problem for everyday users. I've seen some high-end phones snap in half with Jerry's test! It's nice to see the frame itself is still very solid here.

Ha! No, that's not the case at all. I worked for a major U.S. carrier for many years. Every iPhone got broken. And almost every person who came in with a broken phone said something to the effect of "It wasn't broken when I set it on the nightstand last night" or "But I only dropped it 18 inches on to carpet".

I once dropped my iPhone 7 down about 10 feet on to a flight of concrete steps. It was fine. A few months later, it slipped out of my hand, fell about 2 feet and the screen shattered. It's luck of the draw.

Maybe it’s just me but…I would expect my phone to crack if I dropped it on a gravel path (especially if it wasn’t in a case). The times it didn’t crack for you in the past seems like amazing luck more than anything. I have been lucky and never cracked a screen or back glass BUT I usually keep mines in a case or when it’s not in a case there are certain situations I wouldn’t have my phone out in hand if I could avoid it (like if I were on a gravel path). Not a knock on you or anything. It’s just always interesting to me to see when people have experienced cracking multiple phones. I’m clumsy…drop my phone way too much which is why I use a case. Nothing fancy or super bulky but I know if I don’t use something I would probably drop my phone way more than I already do lol

The screen cracks tremendously easily. I dropped this phone off of my couch onto my carpeted floor (about 2feet?) my phone has a case and a screen protector and the front screen cracked. I have had every iPhone from 10-15 and have not broken a single screen and I have dropped them out of my car face down onto concrete….what’s even better is that they apparently don’t have replacement screens available yet.

The back of mine is cracked too, after only a couple months of ownership. Just one thin line about 6 cm long, across a corner. So it's not the end of the world, but it's annoying.

I don't know when it happened, as I have never dropped it or done anything unusual to it.

What geniuses ever thought a glass back was a good idea?! Why not just make it in metal, so it can't break?

Hi! I am from Cebu, Philippines. I purchased my iPhone 15 Pro from an authorized Apple seller on June 2. Since then, I haven’t used it much, as I still have my iPhone 11 Pro from 2019, which has withstood several falls without a single crack. The new 15 Pro has mostly been in my pocket or sat next to me while I work. However, on June 4, just around two days after buying it, I discovered a huge crack on the back part of the phone near the camera area. I am devastated because I did nothing to cause this. It hasn’t fallen, nor was it handled carelessly. Just like any other cautious customer who just purchased a new device, I always take extra care for sure. Apple claims that the latest models are more durable than the older ones, yet this happened? How can it be this fragile? We can't just frame and display it if it can’t withstand normal use. Apple, please I need assistance with this issue. I am scared and anxious! I spent so much money for this!
