Apple TV 4k ethernet only at 100mbps

Well that’s nice to hear but the fact is on my end that rips that used to stream fine from my Plex server now stutter, and with exactly the same hardware including cables my ATV used to connect at gigE and now only connects at 100Mbit. Please don’t try to shine me on about how this problem isn’t a problem by citing ‘standards.’

Yeah I have the old 1080 version of Apple TV and the new os update stopped my Ethernet cable speeds to around 94 mbps but on my ps5 with the same cord I get the full 500 that the internet offers also with the Apple TV box running wirelessly lets it run without a cap at least mine does and since it is a streaming service and not a gaming thing you don’t need insanely low latency for streaming

Network gets capped at 100mbit during sleep mode. Probably energy savings.

Yes. What’s going on is that the device won’t connect to Ethernet at the advertised speed, only at 100Mbps not 1000. My source material is on a server connected directly to the same switch sitting 18” away. And this used to connect fine at gigabit. Something changed yep and no ody seems to be able to determine exactly what :-( If I force gigabit on my switch port the atv refuses to connect at all.

I am having the exact same issue.

it was running at 800mbps but now is capped at 100mbps.

when I start the speed test it will hit 800mbps and then rapidly drop to <100

Any Solution for this, this one device seems to be downgrading the entire network 100 Mbs

I had the exact same issue after updating to latest Apple TV OS. Was losing my mind and tested a lot of things. I swapped to a new ethernet CAT6 cable and it fixed the issue. Might be worth a try if you haven't already..

For me as well - AppleTV 4K used to run gigabit, but now according to my switch will only connect at 100Mbps. Forced the port to gigabit and the connection dropped. Put it back on autonegotiate and it reconnected at 100Mbit. Swapped in a cable that runs my Mac Mini with no problem at gigabit, no change. :-( Low-loss BR rips no longer stream properly.

Not sure of the what's or why's, but my Apple TV gets well over 500 mbps. I probably overpaid, but my ethernet cable that I got at Best Buy cost around $30 and it's a 12 footer. Only thing I remember is the salesman saying "this will get you the best speeds". BTW, my Mac Mini with an intel chip is on wifi and tested out at 286 download speed. I offer no solution other than to say it's definitely possible to get great speeds on the latest Apple TV. Something weird is definitely going on.

The Apple TV HD model always had a 100Base-T ethernet port. Nothing to do with OS version.

Bandwidth and latency of your ethernet ports and cables are mostly independent of each other, and both are more than enough for both gaming and video streaming.

Low-loss BR rips no longer stream properly.

1. Blu-ray HD 1080p has a max bitrate of 40 Mbps, so well under 100 Mbps.
2. Blu-ray 4K has a max bitrate of 128 Mbps, but is usually well under 100 Mbps (more like ~60 for regular frame rates). At 100 Mbps, your media file would be over 90 GB for a 2 hour video (45 GB/h).

I doubt your issue is bitrate related or ethernet bandwidth related.

Gigabit is great, but ALL your components and wiring must support it, or else the home network will scale down. Apple TV 4K’s ethernet port is not the cause of that. Connect it to a proper network, and you’ll see that it runs gigabit (>100) just fine.

It seems the Ethernet connection is only connecting at 100Base-t instead of 1000Base-t. This is probably a driver issue introduced by an update.

and you are sure the cables you use are min cat5e?
