They are not less secure. If Apple finds a vulnerability, they will put out a new version of iOS for the older iPhones. The new version will contain the security patch for that model phone but no new features.

I never said anything about patching the original phone. The OP was asking about security and patching the iPhone 7 & 8. Yes, Apple is still releasing patches in iOS 15.X and 16.X. Even iOS 12.X is still being patched.

Time to Upgrade?

They’re still secure; you’re just not going to get provided with any secur[ity] updates containing bug fixes and such anymore. I’d say take this as a good reason to upgrade. If anything else comes into question, it is incompatibility with apps.

Apple does not patch every vulnerability, in every version of iOS, in versions that can run on older phones. There has not been an update to the original iPhone OS since July 2008, to iOS 8 since December 2016 … or to iOS 12 since January 2023.

The iPhone 7 and 8 can run iOS 15 and 16, respectively, which puts them in a better boat … for now.
