  1. Launch the Home app on your iOS device and tap the Automation tab at the bottom.
  2. Tap the + icon in the top right corner and choose People Arrive as the trigger for your automation.
  3. Select Anyone Arrives as the person who triggers the automation and choose your home location. You can also set a time range for when the automation is active, such as only at night or during certain days of the week. Tap Next when you are done.
  4. Tap Add Scene or Accessory and select your HomePod from the list of accessories. Tap Next.
  5. Tap your HomePod and scroll down to the Media section. Tap Audio and choose what you want to play when you arrive home, such as a song, playlist, podcast, radio station, etc. You can also adjust the volume level and playback options. Tap Back when you are done.
  6. Tap Done to save your automation. You can test it by tapping Test This Automation

I finally spoke with someone in support from Apple. I’m not sure if this works yet as I only did it on my iPad Pro. This morning when I thought it would it wouldn’t. Then I realized I needed to do it on my iPhone as well.

Here’s what support had me do:

  1. If you have the 2 “Home” icons in Location go to General.
  2. Scroll down to Transfer or Reset (item)
  3. Go to “Reset”
  4. Go to “Reset Location & Privacy”
  5. Reset
  6. You should now only have 1 “Home” icon. Activate it for location.
  7. You’ll be prompted on other items as you use them to use this then.

As I said I have done this to my iPhone as well after checking it and will see if it works tomorrow morning coming back from walking the dog.

mberan, did those steps end up working for you? I remember you saying you were going to test them out the following day.

  1. If you have the 2 “Home” icons in Location go to General.
  2. Scroll down to Transfer or Reset (item)
  3. Go to “Reset”
  4. Go to “Reset Location & Privacy”
  5. Reset
  6. You should now only have 1 “Home” icon. Activate it for location.
  7. You’ll be prompted on other items as you use them to use this then.

Interestingly enough, I think I found a fix. At least this worked for me.. and surprisingly, it seemingly has nothing to do with the fact that there are two Home icons in my Locations Services. I have automations set to respond when I arrive home and was having trouble with the audio ones triggering. The lighting ones were fine. Well, in addition to having an automation play audio, I also had SCENES set to adjust the volume within the automation. When I removed the scenes from the automation, everything is working as usual again. The workaround to adjust the volume of the various speakers was to create a SEPARATE automation that just contains the scenes that adjust the volume of the various speakers. When the scenes were mixed in with the accessories in one automation, it didn't work. But having two separate automations, one with the accessories (speakers) and another with the scenes (volume adjustment) seems to have solved the issue 🤷 Now when I arrive home two separate automations will run; one that plays the playlist on all the speakers, and another that adjusts the volumes of the various speaker pairs. I hope that makes sense, & that this helps anyone else trying to achieve similar results.

I’ve set an automation of “When anyone arrives home” for the morning. That seems like it’s working. It’s set only between 5 am and 7 am. I don’t really need it after or before. I still have my automation for the same but with “Night” as the setting and not a specific time range. That’s worked but only on occasion. I’m going to see what happens when I get home later if not then I’ll put a specific time range on it and see.
