Disk Utility does not offer APFS formatting
Using Disk Utility the format options check boxes do not show AFPF. Any reasons why?

You must select Show All Devices from the View popup menu. Then, select the device and Erase.
If you don't show all devices, you cannot change the partition map on the device. That device is probably MBR partition scheme and it won't allow you to erase to APFS. APFS must be on a GUID partition map.
Yep, selected "Show all Devices", and the left hand column showed all the devices, including the two T7's, the one in question and the earlier one used as the Time Machine backup device. So, MBR partition scheme? All I see is as I mentioned earlier "Name" and "Format". No selection option for "Scheme"
Thank you again HWTech. Very interesting comments, some of which I have been thinking about earlier. However, I think I may have stumbled on the answer, in that I think I have been clicking on the wrong part of the description in the left hand section of the page. Got to go out now but I will get back to this in a few hours, and illustrate my point with screenshots.
I might add, and it's nothing to do with this issue, but looking further in the forum for stuff on Samsung SSDs I have noticed posts discussing transfer speeds and different outcomes with different cables. And here I was thinking they were all the same. I'd illustrate with an emoji but I can't seen how to include one ... ahh, here we go - 😀
That's on the Samsung side. The Apple side is more interesting, to me, at the moment. A long long time ago I had an Apple IIC, my first computer, and new floppy disks had to be formatted, so there was the paleo media, if I can term it that, floppy app on the machine: insert floppy, format floppy. Evolution happened and somewhere along the way Apple has differentiated the "box" from the media. It's all quite irrelevant to the issue at hand, which I think is now resolved, but sort of interesting in a history sense. So let's end this discussion and move on to other stuff. Thanks once again all, and thank you particularly HWTech.
No idea, then. There are quite a few posts about problems with Macs and Samsung SSDs. Maybe this is yet another.
That's interesting. I'll do a search.
As has been Mentioned by another Contributor.
The Key Element in this Formatting of the Entire Drive
mine is an Apple SSD, it doesn’t give me that option even when I have selected GUIDE scheme
THANSK A LOT you helped me by showing me this thing
Should have been obvious to me ... but wasn't
Thanks
