Use a Ringtone as Text Tone on iPhone - iOS 17

Since the iOS 17 update I have not been able to assign a ringtone as a text tone. How can I do this now?

I’ve even gone and bought new ringtones and told it to assign the tone as a text tone to a specific contact yet no luck!! Why??

Our on call staff rely on a text message with a ring tone assigned to a particular contact in order to be notified in the middle of the night. It needs to be something loud and persistent.

That is no longer an option. Text tones can't be longer than 30 seconds. You can let Apple know what you'd like to see here:

Meanwhile, you might consider going to Settings>Notifications>Messages>Customize Notifications>Repeat Alerts and set it to 10 times.

I had this happen to me with a work text alert as well. I was able to work around it by changing the tone on my MacBook that was synced with my iCloud. The contacts app on my Mac still had the option to use ringtones. I was able to change it on their and then it updated it on my phone.

just do not open to edit the contact or it will revert back to not being there. Hope this helps someone else!

i agree the ring tones should be allowed on the text messages like they used to. I have contacts assigned so a text or call are the same sound so I know who it is and I'm a nurse so all the doctors are assigned a special sound (ring or text) so when covered in isolation gear I know if it's important enough to leave the room to check it or not!!! Plus when I'm on call the longer phone call tones used as a text sound help make sure it wakes me for emergencies!!! I see NO reason to stop us from having that choice like we used to have in all the other iOS. PLEASE RETURN THIS FUNCTION!!!

If you have updated to iOS 17.1.1, use custom tones for your text tones. The only caveat is that they have to be less than 30 seconds long. You can either buy or create your own tones. The only thing you can't do is use built in ring tones as text tones.

And please, stop shouting demands at us, your fellow users, who can do nothing to change things. It's rude.

Hiya- I've tried Apple senior tech and they just cannot fix this- I do not work for Apple. I'm a rescue volunteer with the same problem. Apple have thanked me for the work around I have suggested. Purchase a 30 second tune and set it as the text tone. It's only 99p. I've also set up a shortcut to play music on my phone whenever an important text comes in.

Apple could get a real PR boost from this if they could sort it out. Loads of users need an alarm text system. SAMSUNG really have the jump on them here. I don't think Apple know what a difference they can make to blue light workers and care workers and industry safety workers.

please please please log a complaint with Apple so they can get the message. I'm not sure they are aware of the difference they can make.
