Use a Ringtone as Text Tone on iPhone - iOS 17

Since the iOS 17 update I have not been able to assign a ringtone as a text tone. How can I do this now?

I’ve even gone and bought new ringtones and told it to assign the tone as a text tone to a specific contact yet no luck!! Why??

Our on call staff rely on a text message with a ring tone assigned to a particular contact in order to be notified in the middle of the night. It needs to be something loud and persistent.

That is no longer an option. Text tones can't be longer than 30 seconds. You can let Apple know what you'd like to see here:

Meanwhile, you might consider going to Settings>Notifications>Messages>Customize Notifications>Repeat Alerts and set it to 10 times.

I have a call booked with Apple on this. Text tones are too short to be used as an alarm for contacts set to 'bypass' for emergency messages. I cannot allocate a longer tone and there is no repeat function. Longest useable tone I've found is 'anticipate' in the classic list. I cannot allocate ringtones to text messages despite having the latest update.

i agree the ring tones should be allowed on the text messages like they used to. I have contacts assigned so a text or call are the same sound so I know who it is and I'm a nurse so all the doctors are assigned a special sound (ring or text) so when covered in isolation gear I know if it's important enough to leave the room to check it or not!!! Plus when I'm on call the longer phone call tones used as a text sound help make sure it wakes me for emergencies!!! I see NO reason to stop us from having that choice like we used to have in all the other iOS. PLEASE RETURN THIS FUNCTION!!!

This is very frustrating...this happened a couple of days ago. Same issue here. I have IOS 17.2.1. Apple support could not help. I was always an Android user and switched because of my family. I am going back to Android. I am just disappointed just got an updated Apple phone. The Apple iphones have been so complex and not intuitive for me. It was so easy with an Android.

Me? Personally? I never knew I had that sort of power.

the security leak that had POLICE DEPARTMENTS putting out warnings within 12 hours of the upgrade

There was no security leak. It was a bunch of click-bait headlines to stories by people who didn't actually understand how the NameDrop feature worked.

I am now searching for an android after all these years with iphones

You should always buy the tool that best meets your needs. No one here has any vested interest in what that is. But, if security is a major concern for you, you might want to do some research about what mobile phone operating system is most secure.

Apple fix this! Any of the stock tones, text or ring, should be assignable as either a text tone or a ring tone, like before iOS 17.
