MacBook Air 13" restarted and is asking for name/password

My MacBook Air 13” has been giving me issues lately by restarting at random. This morning it restarted, and upon turning back on it shows the name/password screen. I have entered all my known usernames & passwords (including iCloud) and it still says that it’s wrong.

Restarting at random is rather a bad sign. Start with If you forgot your Mac login password - Apple Support. Even if you are certain the credentials you are providing are correct, the only way to get past that challenge will be to reset your password.

It might not work, due to the underlying cause of the random restarts turns out to be.
