Stain on aluminum body of '23 MacBook Pro were palm rests.

Hi there,

My 4 week old M2 MacBook pro ‘23 has started to develop stains on the silver (not space grey) aluminum where my hand rests when I edit audio and video. It does not clean off even with the recommended alcohol and is clearly some kind of failure of the finish. I don’t use hand cream or cleaning products other than recommended whoosh on the screen and I have normal PH hands (thanks dermatologist!). I’ve owned aluminium MacBook pros since the first unibody in 2008. Including the retina model 2015. All silver. Never had this problem. And I’m extremely disappointed.

I understand the anodizing process may have changed. It’s certainly a smoother finish when I compare it to my two older MBPs. But what’s the point if it’s just going to stain over time - especially for the kind of pro users who this product is aimed at?

Customer service and Genius Bar just offer to replace it but it just happens again. I'm not interested in free replacements just a fix for a frustrating and widespread (in this community and others and reddit) issue. No one however will give any real insight let alone a solution.

Any real attempts to solve this would be much appreciated. Bear in mind this pic is after four weeks of editing half a day weekdays. And no the lighter areas are not reflection/light - that's the stain.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks for your reply. So if I got a premium brand car and used it normally for four weeks and clear patches appeared in the exact shape of my palm where it rested on the steering wheel - or perhaps on the finish around the door handle - this would be described as ‘normal wear and tear’? Incidentally this is exactly the kind of answer I see in this community and elsewhere. In all instances the aluminium finish is stained where the user rests there hand (usually worse than this as I tired to get this dealt with before it got worse - third time’s a charm) someone replies that it’s normal or to contact customer service. The former implies that normal is a finish that breaks down under regular use within weeks and the latter denies any instances of this and then replaces it at considerable cost. What a silly process. I’d happily pay more for a normal robust finish as per my last two silver MBPs but looks like that’s unlikely.

Yes. Exactly.

Because it is the answer. All materials wear, fade, disintegrate, etc. you cannot stop entropy.

Anyhow this is less about a relatively minor cosmetic imperfection and more about trying to understand a legitimate issue with a product I saved up a long time for and is an integral part of my working life. And also feeling like I'm being fobbed off on various fronts.

If you or anyone else can help me I'd appreciate it.

If not plus ca change and fare thee well :)
