how to open a downloaded file

I want the downloaded file/document to open automatically. Instead it goes off to the downloads file; then I have to open finder>> then find the file. I used to be able to do this; but cant find the suitable setting.

Check your web browser's download preferences. If you're using Safari, it's the "Open safe files after downloading" item in the General tab.
