I was thinking about battery life after Sonoma update again yesterday, and realized the battery drain started when I added widgets to my home screen. I removed all widgets last night, charged the MBA M2 to 100%, and already noticing this morning that the battery life seems to be back to normal. Been sitting here working since 7am, and battery life is only down 2% to 98%. I was in the 65% range by this time yesterday.

Maybe the widgets are constantly looking for updated data?? Maybe a "only refresh every X hours" option would help??

Facing the same issue. My Macbook pro 2018, battery cycle count <239 as I use it not so regular. Updated to Sonoma and found the laptop completely drained overnight few times where it used to be able to "survive" almost a week. What I find also surprising is that "suddenly" service repair on the battery is recommended.

Followed the advise from the thread here to completely re-install Sonoma. It seem to help a bit in terms of the longevity of battery use, though not back to pre-Sonoma levels. However the advice for service on the battery stays.

Clearly seems like a software issue, so hope Apple acknowledges this and provides an update.

All,

hoping I will not give false hopes... I noticed the same problem recently on a MacBook Air M1, running Sonoma 14.2.1.

Looking at running processes, I noticed a process called Ventura (with capital V) taking up 150% of CPU. This seems to be related to some kind of wallpaper stuff... I could not find anything for sure about what it does, but it seemed harmless to kill it. So I just went and tried that, kill -9 <Ventura pid>... since then, everything is back to normal.

Hope this helps others.

Went through a lengthy process to get back to Ventura. Thank goodness for Time Machine and Ventura still available from App Store. All back good now. Over night at 100% in sleep mode still at least 98% when I wake up in the am.

Won’t be updating to any new OS on this machine and it’s going to be a while before there’s a new machine. Disappointing Apple……

It looks like with the release of the Sonoma the old bug of MacOS was reinvented. Monterey 12.0.0 had a battery-draining issue. Until the release of 12.2.1, the workaround was to turn off the BT before putting the computer to sleep mode. I tested this workaround and surprise in the morning computer battery was fully charged even with Chrome, Firefox and Safari browsers left to work in the background. I hope that the fix of this bug will be released soon.

I would give it a couple weeks and compare your results as the BHM comes up to speed.

The rule of thumb—if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability then run on the battery only—this is how you optimize your battery charging and extend the working life of your battery by reducing the cycle count.

Hi Everyone,

I have been running into the same issue since Sonoma, tried all the tips and tricks I could read from different experts, changed default web browser etc etc, nothing ever worked... I have finally Downgraded to Ventura (previous version) now my 2018 Mac Book Pro is finally back working perfectly.

Hopefully Apple you are on planning to fix the issue that seems to impact most of the owners.

Cheers

Fingers crossed there is a 14.0.1 update coming soon that addresses the battery drain issue.

Dear friend.

We are now running the macOS Sonoma version 14.1.2 (23B92)

And absolutely nothing has changed.

I have the following Macbook:

Model identifier: MacBookPro18, 3

Model no.: MKGQ3LL/A

Chip: Apple M1 Pro

Total number of cores: 10 (8 performance and 2 efficiency)

Battery Information:

Model Information:

Device Name: bq40z651

Pack Lot Code: 0

PCB Lot Code: 0

Firmware Version: 0b00

Hardware Revision: 100

Cell Revision: 4814

Charge Information:

The battery's charge is below the warning level: No

Fully Charged: Yes

Charging: No

State of Charge ( % ): 100

Health Information:

Cycle Count: 51

And my macbook is the same 3h30 drops from 100% to 25%.

Your story was very impressive, because it's the same with me.

Yes, the same thing happened to my 2018 MacBook Pro 15", immediately following the Sonoma update. The battery health was "normal" before that, with only 300 cycles and would hold full 100% charge for days on end. The same night I updated to Sonoma, I used the Mac enough to know everything seemed normal after the update and it seemed to be. Battery was at 100% when I shut the lid. Just a day and a half later I grab it, opened the lid and... nothing! I plugged in the power and still nothing, just a black screen. I pick it up and survey the case, looking for some secret reset button or something. I set it back down and just to see if maybe I didn't open it far enough, I pushed the screen to full open and viola, it starts booting up... Strange, it usually simply hibernates and starts immediately. The battery symbol showed 0% so I went into settings > battery and it showed its previously perfect graph all the way at the top of the graph, full on perfect then it plummets to the bottom of the graph, is red and displays a yellow explanation to service the battery! I tried step one in the SMC I think it's called, reset. It's charging and after the full charge I will see if that works. I really, really, really hope this update didn't smoke my battery.
