Battery draining issue on my MacBook Pro post Sonoma update

Did you jump from Big Sur to Sonoma? I'll suggest to upgrade to Monterey most stable version or ventura if you want something newer. Sonoma is for people that have time to lose with buggy os

Yes, I have noticed this too, and it has nothing to do with battery health management (BHM).

I could get 3 to 4 days life out of a full charged battery on a 15" M2 MacBook Air before Sonoma, now getting a 5-6 hours at most before I'm down to less than 25%.

I wondered if like a major iPhone update, if the MBA was "indexing" everything and consuming computing time, and battery, in the process. But this has been going on for a few weeks now, so I don't think it's an issue of "indexing".

Fingers crossed there is a 14.0.1 update soon that addresses the battery drain issue.

Yeah I'm having the same issue with my 2019 15" MBP since updating. Unplugged it before bed (fully charged as you can see) this morning found it dead, with this level of battery drain when closed in sleep mode overnight. Never had this issue before. Obscene.

Tested it today; closed all running programs and at 86% battery closed the lid. 3h later it dropped to 31% capacity. So there is definitively some background action going on. Same time I noticed that when I now open the lid the laptop does not come back to life. For that I need to press the power button.

Short answer is: not for me. Same as some other users above: I updated and then also tested it. Battery repair warning remained. Closed all apps/programs and closed the lid. Couple of hours later: battery fully drained.

Noticed that during all this while the underside of the laptop was very warm. So it does seem some background app keeps running and consuming a lot of energy.

Not too sure if the battery repair warning is valid: it only came after the update to Sonoma and even though the machine is from 2018-2019 the cycle count is, with <300, well within normal/optimal range.

So I am holding out a bit longer in the hope Apple will resolve this before committing to an expensive repair.

Yup I have a macbook pro M1 16inch 2021 and before updating to Sonoma, my laptop was great! i could leave it on for 3 days!.......now, I have to charge it every 45 minutes for it to last me. Apple seems to ruin our battery resulting in a cost for the customers to fork out for a new one, this is not right as our battery cycle is already capped at 1000 and I'm already at 233/1000

Thank you for the advice. Did try this and it does seem to resolve some of the issues! The repair advice for the battery stays however if I close the clamshell after having switched off BT I can stay much longer without charge.

Also the laptop itself doesnt stay "hot/warm" to the touch.

I have had to reset the SMC a few times (3 or 4 I do not remember). BUT now for about 36 hours, it seems to have worked.

I put the MacBook to sleep last night at 10:30pm with 100% after an 'perfect' day and opened it this morning and it was still at 100%.

I would suggest resetting the SMC a few times.

Don't do it. My battery is draining faster than ever since the update. Now it sounds like it's requiring people to fix their battery????

Thanks to the fella who suggested SMC. This seemed to fix the drainage for me.

Yes I've been facing similar issues. My MBA M2 was easily breezing through an entire day of intense work (9-10 hours) and was still having a decent 35 ish percentage charge. After the Sonoma update, it goes from 100 to 30 in 6 hours. Hoping for the new updates to fix this up

I have the same problem and, after the update to Sonoma 14.2.1, my MBpro2019 is getting drained but also blocking. Even if I put it to sleep during the night, I wake up to see the computer turned-off.

Same issue. Just updated my 2018 13" MacBook Air to Sonoma 14.3 -- At first the fan was activated, even during sleep mode (or while my screen was shut)... the battery drained over night, woke up to a dead computer. Taking a really long time to charge now, and the battery doesn't hold a charge... drains super quick. Apple needs to address this issue ASAP!

I can't help but feel Apple want us with older machines to "upgrade" or shell out hundreds of dollars for a new battery ($700 AUD I was told by an authorised repairer).

Makes no sense as to why before Sonoma our batteries were fine and now they're being drained and we're being given warnings/errors about our degraded batteries. Not cool.
