Can’t swipe watch face since update. Fix was to press on screen and swipe to face desired but that doesn’t even work anymore. Turned off watch and done with iWatch for awhile till this silly update is dealt with. Feels good actually to go back to an old school watch.

Your Apple Watch was Working As Designed. The 1 second firm press to change mode and allow swiping is the new way in WatchOS 10. I have no idea why it might have stopped working, but a reboot fixes many glitches so it should still work when you power up again. Chances are that was a one time glitch.
The minor change to make it need two separate actions to change the watch face was a response to the many users who complained about unwanted single touches getting interpreted as a swipe action. The masses spoke and Apple listened.
Sure. Not buying the explanation. I haven’t seen any complaints about accidental swipes…causing what, the next watch face to come up? How is that a bigger deal then now I can’t easily swipe to another face with options I use regularly. Sorry, but your explanation is weak at best.

I hit this problem with last night's update to iOS 10.1.1. I had different watch faces set up with different features. I would quickly swipe back and forth. Now it's a pain in the butt. And I would swipe up to get the controls "to find my iphone". So that UI changed too. Sure I can redo my entire mode of operation for no apparent gain at all. Now I feel I have to check all settings, on all apps just to make sure that nothing important has changed. Really now.

Agreed, the new function is more steps. The purpose of the Apple Watch is to increase efficiency, and make it easy to use tools… why the product management team would agree to “press hold for a time”, then swipe, then select, seems like a backwards move no matter how you look at it. Poor decision.

The more users that send feedback about communicating the UI changes, the more likely it will be seen by a decision maker.
You’re right, it was working as designed. Now for some incredibly odd reason the Product peeps at Apple seem to think making something more difficult is a great UX. Ummmm, #Not.
It would be nice if instead of removing a feature used by many, they made it customizable so those users who don’t like swipe-changing faces could disable it, but others could continue using.
