Bluetooth crashes in MacOS Sonoma (M1 MacBook Pro)

I just upgraded to MacOS Sonoma. Now my bluetooth crashes every 15-45 minutes. Bluetooth turns off entirely (not just devices losing connection).

I already tried all the "bluetooth issues" troubleshooting I found online:

  • unpaired and repaired everything
  • deleted `/Library/Preferences/com.apple.bluetooth.plist`
  • reset bluetooth module with `sudo pkill bluetoothd`
  • restart computer
  • turn off wifi

Nothing has worked.

Now I notice a few Crash Reports in the Console app.

Note this does NOT represent all the times bluetooth has turned off (like I said, it probably every 15-45min), but I wonder if maybe it can provide some clues.

Any advice on how to proceed?

Attached is the full copy from the most recent crash report:

Adding my journey to the log here:

Short Story: Wipe the entire drive and reinstall/downgrade to Mac OS 13 Ventura.

Long Story: Like many others here, my Bluetooth has been cutting in and out since upgrading to Sonoma. For me, it was happening several times a day. My Mac is an M1 Macbook Pro, and the connected Bluetooth devices are a Magic Trackpad, AirPods (seldom connected), and Keychron Q1 Pro. Here's a list of things I tried that haven't worked:

  • spoke with Apple support several times, including capturing and sending extensive logs to them - no dice
  • tried the Onyx approach listed in this thread - no dice
  • ran diagnostics - no issues detected
  • reinstall Mac OS 14 Sonoma without wiping entire drive - no dice
  • reinstall Mac OS 14 Sonoma with wiping entire drive - no dice
  • reinstall/downgrade to Mac OS 13 Ventura with wiping entire drive - success!

Bluetooth has been stable now for several days. At first it wanted to detect my keyboard a few times (more than was needed), but that's since disappeared. I'll be waiting at least several months before testing out Sonoma again on a different drive. Rough stuff.

Note - after running diagnostics I tried downgrading to Mac OS 13 Ventura, but wasn't possible without wiping the drive, as the installer refused to do so. That's when I worked through each of the above 'reinstall' steps.

Edit - I have also tried upgrading to the latest 14.x.x versions - no dice

Yes, it is always good to send in a feedback. Apple developers will get a system report too with it. If there's something to be done, software-wise, they'd do it. It could be that the emulation part is not doing well with newer chips. One of the reasons why I opted to buy an Intel MBP. When I decided to move to macOS, I searched for about 2 months before I found one. I got even a written legal guarantee on it for 6 months. Not a warranty, but a legal guarantee. The seller was so sure about the MBP. I have absolutely no worries on upgrading/updating. The MBP went through a few Venturas and few Sonomas.

Apple disagrees, I’ve been on the phone with them and collected logs. While my specific cause of the problem is not the issue they are currently investigating, they do not think it is a hardware problem.

Sure, if you can get a physical part replaced over the phone, or get a some illness taken care of, without visiting a doctor.😏

The problem is that you don't want to check your Mac at an authorised technical service, but keep on saying that your Bluetooth is breaking off.

You can check in the Terminal, if your Bluetooth is on, that is, if you want.

system_profiler SPBluetoothDataType

And, if you want "the guys in Cupertino" look into your specific matter, send a feedback.

A warranty IS a "legal" guarantee. That's its literal definition.

In any event, me and a coworker both have Apple Silicon Macs and both of our bluetooth devices fail regularly since Sonoma. It happens about 3-4x per day for about 10 seconds, then works and connects.

My magic keyboard and magic trackpad cut out on occasion. Maybe not as frequently as you guys, but once or twice a day (using it all day long) which is irritating and has been causing concern that my (new) computer is malfunctioning. Using the built-in keyboard/trackpad to turn Bluetooth off/on fixes it, but it's a bit interruption in my workflow, and sometimes the keyboard will just lock/shut off and type a bunch of spaces until you jump in.

It all only started with the Sonoma update (like so many other glitchy issues...).

Doesn't seem to have fixed it, but still too early to tell for me. I have not yet have it freeze like I used to have it, I did notice it takes a second or two to connect after coming out of sleep, think that was or is normal.

It does seem like it fixed my network connect and settings issue I had on 14.1.2. But again, will give everything a few days before making final comment about 14.2. Bluetooth audio has been fine on all versions of 14 for me, no crackling.

The latest issue I now have is that Touch ID on my magic keyboards disappears (gets disabled). When I reboot and log in fresh, it is all enabled in settings, then a bit later when I access an app like Photos or password vault as example, then it asks to enter password or use my apple watch, no Touch ID being offered, I then go into settings and all the fields are greyed out and off.

Update: When switching the keyboard off and back on again, then Touch ID is back enabled. 😡

This issue has gotten even worse in 14.2.1! Luckily I am experiencing is on a MacBook, because I now have to disable Bluetooth and re-enable it, then restart my mouse, otherwise it won’t re-connect. That works, because I can use the laptop’s trackpad, now imagine I had an iMac… dear lord, this is embarrassing!

I haven't had my bluetooth devices hang yet after I updated last night, but will see how today goes. It will probably hang sooner than later. I have however still got this Chrome network issue, also another bug in Sonoma that I saw in a Reddit post, as Ventura doesn't have it.

So I will be making a bakcup of my MacStudio, wipe and go back to Ventura on Friday, need to first get some work out of the way.
