I would like to have direct communication with my I-Phone 8+ while working on MacBookPro 14" and don't want to use I-cloud

Hotspot: wired connection from USB-C to Lightning I sometimes need to use my iPhone as a hotspot using 4G. Yesterday I discovered that I can no longer connect my MacBook Air to my iPhone SE (second generation) over Bluetooth. (Lots on this on the Support Forum.) The iPhone has Lightning, the MacBook Air has USB-C. Will a wired connection between them support hotspot networking? Thanks
