Because you bought a new Mac that has less storage than you need. How much storage does each Mac have and how much storage is being used by the old Mac?

The old Mac is using more storage than the storage capacity of the new Mac.

Time for quality external storage. Many of us do exactly that sooner or later. It's just you're one of those needing to do it sooner.
