New Mac not enough space

just bought a new Mac, trying to transfer from my external hard drive to new Mac, and its saying its not big enough. how do I add more storage?

MacBook Pro Storage when copying files I am trying to copy files to/from an external hard drive to a network drive but I keep getting told that I need XX amount of storage.... I am ONLY using 113GB out of my 500GB hard drive and it is still saying it. The files I am trying to transfer are between 3-18GB but whatever I try it just says I need slightly more then the file I transferring I have already removed 122GB of stuff and it is still saying it It's driving me mental now because no matter how much I delete it still says it. Migration Assistant says "There's Not Enough Space" on iMac I am transferring from a 2017 iMac to a new 24" iMac with M4 chip. I have tried several times to use the Migration Assistant. Each time the upload stops and the new mac says there's not enough space. I move more files over to my external drive and delete more large applications. At this point my storage reads: 284.43 GB of 499.96 GB used. Is there an optimal ratio I should be aiming for? Or should I just upload the User Data and download applications later? You cannot add more storage to your Mac. You can only add iCloud storage.

What I do with the base model iMac with not a lot of storage space: I have most of my documents and apps on an external drive. macOS runs from the internal drive to make sure that that will run smoothly. And I have no issues running this setup

Are you using Migration Assistant and a Time Machine backup?
