password problem

I have a password giving me access to my mac mini, and a different password to login to my apple ID online. However, when using Safari, I have to use my machine password to login. If I use Google Chrome, it's the ID password that works. Same happens with the App store. Anyone help?

I understand now.

This is because of a feature in Safari that allows you to sign-in to apple.com and any other online accounts that use Sign in With Apple with just your device passcode, instead of having to remember your Apple ID.

In a future release of Chrome, you may be able to sign-in to apple.com with your device password instead of your Apple ID password thanks to the rollout of Passkeys, a new sign-in standard supported by both Apple and Google.

Hi there,

It sounds like you are referring to the new Locked Private Browsing feature which requires you to enter your password to access Safari Private Browsing windows and tabs. You can turn this feature off if you'd like.

How to turn Locked Private Browsing on or off on Mac

  1. Open Safari.
  2. From the Safari menu, choose Settings.
  3. Click Privacy.
  4. Next to Private Browsing, select "Require Touch ID to view locked tabs." Or unselect it, if you don't want your private windows to lock.

How to turn Locked Private Browsing on or off on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Safari.
  3. Scroll down to Privacy & Security, then turn on Require Face ID (or Touch ID) to Unlock Private Browsing. Or turn it off, if you don't want your private windows to lock.

Hi and thanks for your response - looking at my first post, I didn't word it very well. I don't have to use any passwords to open Safari or Chrome. What I meant to say was that if, whilst already on Safari, I go to login to my Apple ID page (or the App store), I have to use the mac mini password but if I'm browsing using Chrome and want the same page(s), then my Apple ID password is the one that works.
