iPhone 15 charging optimization limit exceeds 80%

Happened the same thing for me today for the first time. Charged to 88%, restarted it, and the battery was 92%. (I have iPhone 15pro max). Could it be, that charging more the 80% is because of upcoming update? After I saw 92% I checked if update is available. And it was.

I would recommend turning the feature off, powering off the iPhone, turn it back on after about an hour, then torn on the setting,

power off the phone again, then turn it on again after about 15 minutes. This should work as I have an iPhone 15 and used this myself.

After a couple of weeks it happens to stop on 80, other times goes to 81… 82… kind of weird this behavior. I think, if occasionally it goes over 80 and fully charge would be nice to have some kind of alert that during that charge that will happen so we don’t unplug.

I have had the same issue. It took me at least 10 full charges to 100% before the iphone started charging to 80% - all in the 80% limit option. So, enable this option (if you hadn’t) and keep charging your phone. Be patiënt. After (much) charge cycles it will finally start charging to 80%.

This battery problem is hilarious. At first when i bought the phone it was all good but then out of nowhere with 80% optimisation is on it charged upto 90%+. I wasn’t worried about it much and also it did not happened again till today it charged upto 83%. With new update, comes great bugs. (Please fix it soon).

Doesn’t matter what setting I use in battery settings it charges to 80% when using a mains charger & charges to 100% when using wireless charger. Tried all three settings which are all exactly the same. Please fix this problem Apple as there’s obviously a problem in iOS. Currently on iOS 17.3.1.

so after updating to iOS 17.3.1 my iPhone 15 pro Max started to lose battery really fast 1% for 3 min where before I could past 7-10 min with 1% of browsing the web. I have many issues with notifications all my apps like Viber Instagram WhatsApp telegram don't show messages at all. I received the message from the sender but I have to open the app to see that actually I have received the message. the phone doesn't show anything on lock screen or on active screen. furthermore battery exceeds charging of the 80% limit, before the update I had absolutely zero issues since I got the phone and immediately after updating to 17.3.1 before like three days or something like that, I started having this issue with the battery limit it doesn't matter if I turn it off turn it on it still charges above 80%. if I restart the phone the notifications start to come but after an hour or two they are gone again. The phone heats up a bit more in the hand where hefore even after 15 20 min ot browsing web it was still coller to the touch, now it's significantly warmer. I do notbuse my phone for gaming or something, just talking, video/photo shooting, shopping online. Furthermore - when I was updating the phone I was at about 82% battery life, I did not use charger or anything like that during the update and after the phone restarted, the battery was showing 99%?!?!

Today my iPhone decided to charge above 80% limit (which usually works fine) and charged to 100% at night. Around 3 am. Then even it was still connected to the charged it has lost 10% in just 3-4 hours. Usually I lose same amount during whole night. 

It looks like iPhone decided to charge to 100% but then realized that 80% limit is on so started to drain more and more just to reach 80%. I don't know what is going on. 

I am also wondering why I see status that iPhone right now is charged to 80% while in fact it is still above. I decided to turn off 80% limit for now just to reach full 100% because I was worried that something is broken and iPhone won't stop draining

I have the same problem. I am using the USB C cable and adapter that came with my M1 MacBook pro to charge my iPhone 15 pro max. I've selected 80% limit for charging but it goes beyond 90% if the charger remains connected. The charging should ideally stop after 80% is reached.

I had similar issues when I first bought my iPhone 15. It turned out the problem was with the charger brick I was using. Once I changed the charger brick, the issue stopped, and I've had peace of mind since then

I’m having the same problem. My iPhone 15 charged until 82% and the 80% limit optimization was on the battery level went to 87% after restarting my device. Plz reply if someone knows why this happens and how I can fix this issue. Is it an iPhone problem and should I get it exchanged?

Thank you for the update. Apple really needs to fix a few things honestly. I’m also not happy with the iPhone 15 flashlight. My iPhone XS had a better and brighter light and with the 15 it looks pink. Then now the whole battery and charging issue.

My 15 Pro is only 4 weeks old I am on the 80% Limit but lately it now surpasses the 80% limit. I’ve tried toggling it off and on again but it still sometimes surpasses. Does anyone know a fix to this?

tldr : the 6% excess in charges is needed for the battery to complete 1 charging cycle.

I might explain this badly but hope you can understand. To avoid getting your battery being charged more than 80%, best tips is to always start charging at 20%. You can try this and confirm later.

The logic behind this is charge limit refer on the charge cycle. Battery being charged from 0%- 100% in one charging session considered to be charged by 1 cycle. If you charge from 20% and the battery limits the charge at 80%, your charge cycle is incomplete. In charging electronics battery terms, incomplete charging cycle is good while complete charging cycle is bad.
