iPhone 15 charging optimization limit exceeds 80%

I have my iPhone 15 charging optimization set to 80% limit. Today, I take my iPhone off the charger and the battery level reads 86%. Does anybody know why this would occur, and what could be done to prevent this from happening again? Thanks in advance for your response.

From the Apple article:

About 80% Limit with iPhone 15 models

With iPhone 15 models, you can choose between Optimized Battery Charging, 80% Limit, and None.

When you choose 80% Limit, your iPhone will charge up to about 80 percent and then stop charging. If the battery charge level gets down to 75 percent, charging will resume until your battery charge level reaches about 80 percent again.

With 80% Limit enabled, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.

This implies that it is around 80% not necessarily exactly 80% so it may still be working as intended. You could report it to Apple if you think it is a bug and not functioning correctly though

They will NOT exchange it for the battery issue. It passes their “test” so they claim it is “fine”. I’ve talked to so many managers and service techs. We’re all stuck with this issue unfortunately. My phone has charging issues where it disconnects and reconnects all the time and stops at 80% with charging optimization off and doesn’t go past no matter how long it’s on there. The USB-C charging has major problems. The latest iOS 17.4 has still yet to fix it 6 months later.

Is it ok to charge my iphone to 100%?

Of course. iPhones have been doing this for many years. Just make sure that you have Optimized Battery Charging enabled.

Connect the phone to the power supply at night and leave it connected all night....every night.

I've always been able to get 4-5 years use from the battery using this method. If the 80% option might result in a few more months use from the battery, I could care less.

I start every day with the battery at 100% and can get 2-3 more hours from the battery that way compared to an 80% limit, which in my opinion is more of a gimmick than a benefit.

I got my iPhone 15 in September and have it set to 90 max. Today for the first time it went to 99, restarted the phone, and now it’s 100%. Call me crazy, but it seems like Apple loves to push updates that temper with their phones for their benefit.. Think about it; they want to sell newer models, they push an update that “accidentally” bugs the charging settings in order to drain your battery, forcing you to eventually get a new phone, at your expense, because of their software…

The battery should have gone up to 100% a few times already, and may have likely occurred without you noticing. This would be normal and expected no matter where you had the charge limit set for.

The reason for this is explained in multiple posts on this thread. Please take a few minutes to read them.

Charge limits.......the current "gimmick". I just saw an article on the Internet that claimed that the upper limit should be set for 72% and lower limit 26% to double battery life. That is funny.

Of course, you had to buy the "special software" to allow this and the article included a link for this.
