Alert and system sounds are too loud and do not respect the volume level set in the “Sounds and Haptics” settings

I’m running the latest iOS 17 on an iPhone 15 Pro Max, media volume is at a comfortable level, the volume level in the “Sounds and Haptics” settings is set to minimum (changing the volume in these settings gives an audio preview that is also comfortable). When in silent mode my phone makes no sound… all is good so far.

However, when receiving a message, sending a mail, or any other alert that is accompanied by a sound, the volume is at maximum level… it’s so loud it’s embarrassing. Has anyone else got this issue? Or any suggestions for a fix.

Thank you in advance!

If anyone is still having this issue, I've noticed an odd behavior and way to adjust the 'other than obvious' volume for system tones and such. I notice this issue especially when using Speech to Text. When I turn on/off as I'm using it, the tone that sounds was ridiculously loud. No system volume settings that I could find were relevant.

Here's what I found - Go to any text field that you can use Speech to Text in and enable it. The second the tone sounds, adjust your volume. The idea is to adjust the volume while the tone is the 'active sound', so to speak. This allowed me to adjust the volume of the system tones.

I hope this helps. Apple makes a generally solid product, but things like this are rough-draft material.

Same thing here no matter what I try it seems like I did a reboot and it fixed it one time for a short time strange. Just upgraded to iPhone 15+256 GB two days ago. This did not happen on the iPhone 11 with iOS 17.1 .1 two days ago it's something to do with the new phones or the 17.1.2 update I hope they fix it soon because I hate waking everybody up 🤔

This happens to me too only since my iPhone 14 pro, never on the older models. I basically always have the volume switch on silent. No matter how many times I go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics and slide the ringer down to 20% it somehow keeps turning right up to max volume.

This only really shows up for me with alarms and medication notifications (since it's on silent). I often have AirPods on too, and wonder if it has to do with those... the alarm will go off at max volume on the phone itself, even if I'm listening to something else at the time through the headphones at normal volume. I wonder if sometimes if its a bug with switching between AirPods and non-apple brand headphones, as I do this a lot.

I already had Sound Recognition off so tried turning it back on, restarting, turning it off and restarting, time will tell if that fixed anything.

Things I've tried that didn't work:

  • Going into Settings > Music > Turning off Sound Check
  • Going into Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Turning off 'Change with buttons' (I keep this off anyway and it still constantly goes back up, have tried turning it on and off again too, no dice)
  • I don't have any Audio & Visual settings in Accessibility on
  • Accessibility > Voice Control is all off
  • Accessibility > Voice Over is off
  • Accessibility > Live Speech is off
  • Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Attention Aware Features is off
  • Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Reduce Loud Noises is off (but I've tried it on and it also didn't fix this)
  • Seems unrelated but maybe not - I also don't have any focus modes tied to customised lock screens as when I set these for both my watch and iPhone and tied various ones to a focus mode suddenly NONE of my notifications, call sounds, haptics or anything worked, not even a vibration when people called, no matter if I had allowed them specifically or not - I had to delete them all and reset the phone and watch both. Even without this issue my apple watch 8 and iPhone 14 pro don't seem to "like each other" and don't work as seamlessly as the apple watch 6 and iPhone 11 did. Siri never knows who should answer me now, when it hears me at all.

Same problem here, iPhone 15 Pro Max. But not always... I use airpods pro sometimes, and I wonder if switching audio phone phone to airpods and back affects it.

mine was fine in the morning, then I was using my airpods and the pods switched between my laptop and phone a couple times, including getting a phone call while listening to music on the laptop, which switched them over, then my alerts on the phone were full blast.

This is still continuing to be an issue for me. I tried the suggestions below in the thread. Does anyone have any new fixes? This is my first iPhone and I’m not impressed with the bugs I’ve constantly run into. Especially with the price tag on these phones. I have to use my phone on silent to avoid disrupting everyone around me with the crazy loud notifications.

I am new to iphone too and it is a bit disappointing that this issue has been going on for so long. I created my own ringtones in GarageBand and tried choosing the same one for ringer and for email alert. The difference in volume is noticable even when just selecting the sound. I tried reducing the volume in GarageBand - still plays at full volume. I even tried a sound that fades in - that also plays full volume from start to finish with no fade. I will be going back to Android before long.
