Trackpad on my MacBook Air not working post macOS Sonoma Update.

After updating the operating system to Sonoma 14.0, the trackpad on my 2022 M2 MacBook Air sporadically stops working. Restarting only temporarily fixes the problem.

Don't know if this will help anyone, but after I updated my laptop was having sporadic issues with the trackpad not selecting/deselecting things on the desktop, but not directly an issue with apps. Turns out I left a bluetooth keyboard in my desk drawer that was holding space + shift when things shifted, and being connected to the laptop obviously caused absolute chaos. Just in case anyone out there is going for a full downgrade to sort the problem out and haven't thought of it! (mildly embarrassing).

My trackpad and keyboard on my MacBook Air M1 suddenly started failing sporadically under Sonoma, and I had to completely restart the system to be able to work again.

I have the exact same problem. Same MacBook Air with the M2. Upgraded to Sonoma 14.0 and I have sporadic issues with the trackpad not clicking. Specifically, when I maximize my Chrome browser window, the last bookmark on my Bookmark Bar and the >> to the right become unclickable sporadically. If I minimize the browser window and click, it works, but this is not normal. A reboot solves the issue for a time, so I'm pretty sure this is a software bug. I hope they can find a solution soon. Thank you for helping realize it's not just me!

This is what solved the problem for me.

I use an external monitor plus a wall projector in my classroom. When I have them plugged into the MBP through the USB-C port through a dongle, all mice just stop working properly. If i switch it to the HDMI port, the mice work properly.

It appears if too much is plugged into a USB port through a dongle the system can't handle it well.

It's a hard issue to replicate as the trackpad malfunctions sporadically. Basically, every once in a while it seems like the laptop is overworked (it's not, but it is acting like there is no RAM available to operate). I'll go to move the cursor, and nothing will work. If I wait for a few seconds, the cursor starts responding again. I can tell this is a 14.0 issue cause it's never happened before. I just wanted to post something here to see how widespread it might be.

Just to update and add to the discussion. I use safari and edge not chrome. This didn’t happen on my Mac before Sonoma. It only seems to happen for me when screen sharing or mirroring using airplay to an Apple TV on my school’s enterprise WiFi network. The Apple TV is hardwired to the network. Using activity monitor shows me just how much processing power is needed to AirPlay but I never checked before updating to Sonoma so I don’t know if it’s normal or even connected.

I have a MacBook Air 2022 M2, it doesn't have an HDMI port... and you indicate the adapter is not a solution either. It's a software bug that is triggered by space management of additional displays. Display management was already an issue before (you couldn't add more than 1 additional monitor without additional docking hardware and software), but it is already triggered with 1 external monitor now.
