Trackpad on my MacBook Air not working post macOS Sonoma Update.

After updating the operating system to Sonoma 14.0, the trackpad on my 2022 M2 MacBook Air sporadically stops working. Restarting only temporarily fixes the problem.

Don't know if this will help anyone, but after I updated my laptop was having sporadic issues with the trackpad not selecting/deselecting things on the desktop, but not directly an issue with apps. Turns out I left a bluetooth keyboard in my desk drawer that was holding space + shift when things shifted, and being connected to the laptop obviously caused absolute chaos. Just in case anyone out there is going for a full downgrade to sort the problem out and haven't thought of it! (mildly embarrassing).

None of the solutions mentioned here make sense in my case as this is a brand-new 2023 14" Macbook Pro and after updating to Sonoma, occasionally the trackpad stops working but only in Chrome and only when in full-screen. If I reduce Chrome to a window, the trackpad works fine again.

As a retired software engineer, that behavior does seem to indicate the issue is in software but while it may be Sonoma (I updated the MBP to Sonoma pretty quickly after bringing it home so I have no idea if the issue would have happened before the update) it may also be an issue with Chrome itself.

No, I hoped it would.

I was just told on the phone by an upper level tech that the SMC reset they did, linked above, in the store yesterday doesn’t work.

My computer now boots in to a recovery mode that I can not get past the sign in page. I would call for support to try it, but I don’t have an hour to be on hold and deal with the first layer of incompetence to get to someone who knows the keys to push to make that happen.

Apple support has really gone down the tubes. It was the complete reason I bought my first mac in the 90s, when I really didn’t have the extra money for one, and countless other Apple products and raving reviews since then. I am considering sucking it up and learning to deal with a windows machine. If I get no help, why not pay less for the same no help?

I have a second appointment today and hope it is resolved. I’m bringing a hammer to smash it and demand an apple care replacement if it comes to that.

Mine is still fine. I talked to 9 employees about it. My biggest concern is how uninformed and apathetic they were. For me, the quality of support was what separated Apple and its completely gone. In the past, what solved my issue would have been done in the first call. Calls to support now are met with people with less knowledge than me, a tech bone head, doing searches to find answers. Even worse, no one had any desire to help.

Currently running 14.2.1 and issue is still happening when connected via Airplay to an AppleTV and screen mirroring as a separate display. FWIW I had Bambu Studio running and according to Activity Monitor it was using up a lot of CPU % so I quit that application, but I still don't like that this is an issue. There should be enough priority RAM given to the mouse/cursor even when using Airplay.

I was having the same issue here and did the same thing you did and it worked, I have not had any issues since then. thank you for sharing. I have a feeling that apple is trying to make obsolete all the old trackpads and mouses so that we buy new ones, you know how they are. It's weird because my old external trackpad was working perfectly and it all started after I did the update to Sonoma.

Same issue here. M1 MBP, brand new, no issues until I installed Sonoma and now the trackpad is almost completely dead. It's awesome how Apple don't have the option to navigate your way through the reinstall process using the keys as well! Otherwise I'd be able to have a possibility whittled-down / see if the reinstall actually worked. Someone mentioned the word 'unacceptable' earlier, I agree. Brand new computer reduced to a (rather pretty) paperweight. At least I can work on my motorbike for a few weeks now!

This is exactly the problem I have had with my external display since upgrading to Sonoma 14.3.1. Never had a problem before but now I can barely work on my Mac as the trackpad constantly glitches.

I have an adapter that plugs into the USB-C port on my Mac, and the external display plugs into said adapter's HDMI port.

How do I fix this as I only have 2x USB-C ports on my Mac and am ready to throw it out of the window!
