When I search in the iMessage app, and hit enter, it glitches, and I can't type any text in the program any more. It shows the cursor, I can type in any other program, but the imessage kind of the stops working.

If you have software that is not responding as expected a good first step is to test in safe mode. The support article Use safe mode on your Mac outlines how to perform that test. Note that the article also includes follow-up steps to take based on the results. Complete those as necessary to work toward a solution for this behavior.
You can also hold the Shift key on your keyboard while opening an app to remove saved-state data and force a sort of refresh for that application that may be worth trying as well.
