New Sonoma update in mac air m1 is Slow

I also encountered this when my MacBook Pro (without my permission) upgraded to Sonoma 14.2.1. The whole UI froze for about a second once every 8 seconds or so. I then installed the 14.3.1 update and luckily, this has solved the issue. This must have been the ‘performance issue’ reported to be fixed in the 14.3 update.

Sonoma has ruined my Macbook Air M1 battery. It did hold only 3 hours after the update and it took around 55GB of my 256GB storage for macOS and System files. I have downgraded to Big Sur. I am very happy now. Battery returned to normal, it holds around 8hours again and System files and macOS uses only about 35GB.

Scratch that, the problem is still present, but only when music is playing in the Music app. Stop the music, and the hiccups are also gone.

I have a Macbook Pro M1 16Gb Memory and it certainly slowed down.

It is noticeable on Chrome and working on Final Cut Pro becomes impossible.

I am downgrading to Ventura

My Intel Mini is also taking a very long time to reboot and restart after upgrading to Sonoma (Finder takes the longest to load.) Activity Monitor shows it is re-indexing, reloading photos, reloading iCloud files, rescanning backup files, etc., etc. This is typical with system upgrades, but this is taking much longer than usual and the Finder issue is not normal.

I have a lot of large files so will give it a day before coming to any conclusions, but I would recommend people wait for the inevitable update before upgrading.

My MBA M1 sees no speed change with Sonoma. You may have some app interface slowing the process down. Do you have any anti virus apps or similar running?

Same thing on MacBook Pro 14 m1 pro, I decide to downgrade to Ventura.

Some more details: playing local MP3/M4A files in the Music app is a surefire way to reproduce this problem. The whole system freezes for a second, approximately every 7 seconds. The WHOLE system—except the Music app itself. I can now only play my local music library if I'm not going to use the computer for anything else, or it just drives me crazy. It's as if we're back in 1999 when playing an MP3 consumed almost all CPU.

Playing an internet stream also exhibits the problem, but much less frequently. It appears it will then only freeze when the metadata inside the stream changes, like the artist and album title.

It seems like someone seriously screwed up real-time priorities in this release. Please fix this.

My M1 runs faster now, but the battery dies quicker. I tried saving battery in every way, but it didn't work. So, I switched back to Ventura, and now my awesome machine lasts a long time again.

I wouldn't make a big deal about it: Apple will certainly soon release a technical update to resolve this. I also have positive sides thanks to Sonoma: finally Continuity (from Mac Mini M2 Pro) also works wirelessly, which I was never able to do with Ventura and it only worked with Macbook

I am having the same problem, literally typing this now and every word is lagging, I also noticed some applications like display link which is used for external display are very laggy now.

Never in my life had to restart my MacBook Air until Sonoma came along. Apple is really screwing up their OS

I was gonna upgrade Ventura to Sonoma on my Air M1 but after I read and research about this, I think I'm just gonna stay in venture, I don't think I wanna risk it. Since It's been running so well in Ventura. It's a good idea isn't? battery long last is kinda big deal to me and the smoothness.
