Possible solution: I shut off background app refresh, didn’t change anything. However, I noticed that the overheating and battery drain seemed to occur when I’m watching videos on the YouTube app. So, I uninstalled YouTube, shut the phone off, turned back on, then reinstalled YouTube app. The phone has stopped overheating and the battery usage has returned to normal, even while watching videos. I hope this helps others with the same issue. I was bumming thinking I was going to have to get a new phone.

It’s the update to iOS 17+ if anyone tells you different, they are just regurgitating answers from tech support. I’m sure plenty of people are smart enough to know about battery optimization. If it came down to “settings” not so many people would be having the same issues as there just happens to be an influx of reports of overheating and battery drainage.

@Apple please fix these problems!

I have been using the iPhone 14 Pro Max for the past 8 months without any problems related to overheating. However, after I upgraded the software to iOS 17, my phone started to overheat and would not charge until it cooled down. Even after upgrading to the latest software version, iOS 17.03, the problem persists.
I usually charge my iPhone 14 Pro Max and Apple Watch Ultra 2 with the Apple Duo Charger every day. Before going to bed, I would put both devices on the charger and leave them there for 7 to 8 hours. When I would wake up in the morning, both devices would be fully charged. However, after the latest updates, this is no longer the case.
Please advise on how to resolve this issue.

I thought it was an isolated case with my iPhone running on IOS 17.1 getting very hot during charging, until I ran into this forum of people experiencing the same. I am also very unhappy that the my battery that I had replaced last year by Apple, is now down to 92% on battery health. The iPhone is losing its credibility each and every day with me, so much so, that I may soon go over to an Android.

I'm having the same problem with my 14 Pro Max as well. I've NEVER had an overheating issue until the IOS 17.x.x update. Along with battery degredation and usage drains much faster now. I constantly do the hard reset and that helps...for a while. If it helps at all. I also close out all apps as well. Quite frustrating. I've removed my case to charge to see if it continues to overheat. Note, I use wireless charging 99.9% of the time. While it is charging the temperate of the phone is heating up! Ugh. @Apple, wth!! I've been using iphone for years.

I’m having the same problem. My phone is HOT to the touch. And it gets hot in less than 10 minutes on the charger. I first thought that the newer 20 watt charging block was the problem. But … It also Happens when using the small Apple charging block or the USB connection on the back of my IMac.

It’s obvious that Apple has a bug and the solutions given out about background apps is bogus. This never happened until the 17 update.

Im having the same issue too! My phone is heating up so fast as I am unable to do video calls with my love ones on messenger. Previous IOS version doesn’t have issue at all until IOS 17. From 99% percent battery health it is now down to 94% in just two weeks! I already did the tips and tricks on how to take care battery that I watch on YT and still nothing happened. Maybe this is kinda a bug or something. I hope someone in Apple can read this forum.

I've had the iphone 14 for about 10 months now and it gets so hot with normal use. I wake up at 7:30, use my alarm clock, and apple music otw to work and my battery is at 64% by 9:30am. I turned off automatic IOS updates, updated all my apps, and I restart my phone almost twice a day because of the glitches I experience. I don't know what else to do! There needs to be some sort of support from Apple because this phone was way too expensive!!!

My iPhone, 14 promax overheats while playing Wordscapes so bad that the game becomes virtually unplayable with delays and slow downs and I have tried everything that people have posted and nothing has helped yet. Always been an iPhone fan and now this particular issue is possibly changing my mind. I have played Wordscapes on my iPhone 12 pro max for two years and never ever had an overheating problem that caused the game to be so erratic. And iPhone OS 17 is the iOS that was installed on the new phone so I never had experience with it with any other operating system so maybe that’s what the problem is and if so hopefully Apple will come up with some type of fix that will cure this issue because it is definitely something that bothers me every single day.

My 14Pro Max after iOS 17.2.1 update decrease performance significaly ,gaming , apps, or just watching the movie after 20mins decrease brightness to like 50% i am 100% shure its Because of the iOS update also i suffer some Stutters when scroling. Apple should increase thermal threshold border a bit with update and let the device heat up to 2-3Celsius more so we can have higher performance for longer and not just cut Down the brightness and frequencies when device is still not so hot, i see my 14 pro Max decrease performance when hit 40c and That is not much . Let it Heat to 45 and after that reduce the performance but give us some time to Enjoy for what we payed .
