MacBook Pro with macOS Sonoma crashes frequently and randomly.

Sonoma keeps crashing frequently and randomly. Never had any such issue with Ventura. Issues started after installing Sonoma on my Mac Book Pro (Apple M1 Max, 16 inch). Clearly a buggy OS, all apps up to date. Don't point at apps, please ...it's a Sonoma problem.

This is absolutely a Sonoma issue. Using MacBook Pro M1 max. No issues at all until installing Sonoma last week. I've talked to tech twice, shut down all background apps and start ups, shut down all apps, removed all USB devices and re-installed Sonoma. Even after all of that, if I leave the computer idle for an hour or two - it just shuts down.

The Panics logs (I've collected 11 so far) are all identical regards of apps on or off. This is the start of the log. You might check to see if there are similarities.

I've been having the same issue since updating to Sonoma. My mac crashes in sleep mode. When I start my mac up a pop up message is displayed saying I shut down my mac because of a problem. I have issues with my touch bar as it seems to flash during start up and sometimes doesn't turn on. Now I'm having problems trying to open Activity Monitor as it seems to be crashing. Apple you guys need to address this problem.

I posted something 5 mins ago but god knows where it went. Anyway, the 14.2 seems to be even worse than what was previous, hard drives quitting and just had 2 crashes.

This is an effect of the recent changes in the forum. By default, replies are order by "Best" - which completely wrecks the thread. You can change it to sort by "Oldest" to restore chronological order. It can be done each time, but it can also be changed in your profile preferences, so if you are logged in to the forum, it will always sort chronologically.

I have a 2019 MacPro with multiple SSDs connected internally for extra storage. It all performed flawlessly with previous OS renditions, but after installing Sonoma it has crashed regularly just as described by many others in this thread. Sonoma was updated again yesterday to 14.2 and has crashed once since then. Are things looking up or is it a false dawn?

2023 MacBook Pro 14" M2 Max - No change on Sonoma 14.2.1...

As soon as you turn on iCloud syncing and try and open a new window the finder crashes along with system settings.

I'm having to use my old 2015 MacBook Pro running Monterey 12.7.2., at least it works...

HEY APPLE - NEW STUFF IS USELESS UNLESS IT WORKS !!

Please sort it out, loosing patience on this one.

That would explain a lot of the why I don’t see any issues and what I have been asking for on many similar threads. I can’t file bug reports if I don’t know how to make it crash.

I have no need to make icons larger as I don’t use them. I open everything through Spotlight or list view sorted by Date Added.

I’ve never had a problem with Screen Sharing, though it is always viewing the M1 from MBP.

I don’t have any issues with the Applications folder, but if you mean via screen sharing, I don’t have a need to do that so would not have noticed.

I’ve always assumed SMB access is slow. I don’t know what fast would look like.

There is another post where the OP has very good documentation on slow external drive access, and is worse for APFS HDD. I don’t remember if HFS+ is affected at all.

Finder has always had a problem with large number of files and deeply nested folders. It really isn’t a suitable file browser for those situations; never has been. If it is worse in Sonoma, maybe they tried to fix that.

Yes you’re right of course. But they have to take responsibility for releasing a corrupted and/or faulty update. As we’ve read Apple don’t acknowledge this at all - AppleCare deny it and try and blame apps. Genius bars (if they are available - in my location not) can’t fix it. So, in my case, I had to pay an outside contractor to do it even though my MacBook Air still under AppleCare. Apple are never going to admit a downgrade to a previous update is the fix! Therein lies the responsibility. Futile though it may be.
