As an update, it seems things requiring power from the device that is plugged in is the issue. My wireless mic setup, which plugged in through lightening worked the other day, but does not anymore either. I plugged it into a lightening based phone and it still works fine, but using a USB-C adapter, the little blue LED doesn't even come on, but an HDMI out adapter seems to work fine.

I’m using a seagate firecuda 2TB external ssd. Which is a gaming ssd originally purchased for my ps5. Formatted as instructed by apple. Initially the phone did not recognise the drive with all possible usb-C cable. Then tried with the thunderbolt cable which came with my benq monitor. It worked. So went ahead and purchased this cable 👇🏻

now it works any time I plugin no blocks. Hope they don’t screwup after any update.

I thought so too, but mine does still throw an error even after entering the password in the Files app. Crucial X10 1TB. It's partitioned into two drives, both on AFPS Encrypted. Tried multiple cables, none work. Files opens the drive though. I think there might be the same verification process that has to be done on the Camera app as well. Maybe those two apps (despite being native) don't talk to each other.

I have the same problem, with an iPhone 15 Pro Max 512 GB connecting a Sandisk Extrem Pro 4Tb SSD, I tried several USB-C cables, even an iPhone charging cable. I can't even record some seconds of video. I'm quite disappointed, I was planning to record good videos with a Smallrig kit but... wasting money and time. Try to solve that on new updates guys

same issue here🤦🏼 i wish i had to check on this first before buying the product. It’s quite frustrating and disappointing that it doesn’t work out. Too excited to receive it today but then how many times flipping, inserting, to pc and my phone using 4 different type c adapters, cables still not working. I was preparing it for my vacation abroad expecting that it can really help me to save my storage and at the same time to have a better and quality photo🥹 the only thing confusing me is that it works on my laptop, but in my iphone its not showing in my files

Same issue here with my Samsung T7. It worked before but I notice that it has stopped working since the last update. It really sucks that they took the ssd feature away. I relied heavily on it and now it’s gone. I have tried with all of my T7’s and other random ssd’s and I get nothing. This really blows.

As for ntfs or exfat external drives connected to iPhone 15 Pro Max (that I have) and not recognized, the main reason is that the drives must be scanned for errors from a window (in my case) pc. What I mean is that the main reason they don’t get recognized sometimes is because they have been ejected even from a TV set without safe ejection. This makes the drive return errors and the iPhone not reading it.

I had the same issue with My Passport Ultra 1TB (HDD) by Western Digital. It has a USB-C connector but I could not find it in my files whenever I connect it to my iPhone 15 pro max. However, I removed the password of the drive by using my PC and connected it again to my iphone and suddenly the drive worked perfectly!

I am not sure why the drive did not work when it was encrypted with a password, but if your drive encrypted with a password and not working when you connect it to your iPhone then I recommend to remove the password and try again.

Hope this will help you and solve the issue!

(iPhone 15 pro) Initially, it would not find my 1TB Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD, so I turned phone off and on. Took 10 seconds or so to pop up as a device in FILES app - but eventually did. I am backing up all photos (3700) to it. You can create a folder on SSD in FILES app on phone. The speed is NOT USB-C standard. Is really taking a while. But, it is working.
