From > Encrypt and protect a storage device with a password in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support
"When you format an internal or external storage device, you can encrypt and protect it with a password. If you encrypt an internal device, you must enter a password to access the device and its information. If you encrypt an external device, you must enter the password when you connect the device to your computer."
Eject and disconnect the external drive.
Then reconnect the external drive to your computer.
Does it not ask for the password when reconnected to your computer?
The Partition Map Scheme is GUID Partition Map, the old Apple Partition Map or Master Boot Record...?
Does "Partition Map Scheme" equal "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"?? There is no boot record, this is merely external storage that I would like to password protect. Thanks
I don't mean to be rude, but how does that relate to having password protection added to an external drive? I'm sorry but getting into the weeds about drive partitioning is not my forte.
Wait, Gateway is one drive it is not part or a subset of another drive. I named it Gateway, I could name it anything. It is an entity unto itself.
I don't have an Hitachi drive.
I'm sorry, I didn't pick up on that. It is from a very old laptop, best guess vintage 2007. Thanks for pointing that out to me.
That worked, I didn't understand how the "protection" worked. I thought it would be whenever I accessed it, but it is when it is plugged into the computer. Thanks for all you help and patience.
You're welcome.
