Sonoma freezes / crashes when playbacking videos in Quicktime

Still glitching every time I connect a monitor, both with Quicktime and VLC.

Any updates?

FYI - A workaround is to use extended display mode instead of mirrored.

It’s just a professional shame that since this OS has released, this issue has not been addressed. The forbidden fruit has been compromised.

Again: It is unconscionable that Apple has not fixed Quicktime and VLC freezing issues. It's been years!!!

FIX is EL Media player.

QuickTime (Apple TV) still pure disappointment, soon we will have a new OS and issue still not resolved SMH I have to watch Apple TV from web browser.

Thank you. So that likely means that M1 computers will be permanently stuck with the issue... Would love to be proven wrong.

Yes it works fairly well in VLC as long as the arrow is not placed on the bottom of the screen. Weird ja!

Looks like this is a bit of a problem for several people. Perhaps VLC @videolan can quicker come out with a uppdate to solve the problem with Sonoma?

On the other hand @Apple cannot stand around doing nothing as Quicktime doesn't work well with Sonoma?

Quicktime/computer was only freezing when I played .mp4 files. I took those files and output them as ProRes 422 LT and Quicktime seemed to play okay. I do hope it gets fixed soon, because it's a little nerve wracking with a public event coming up soon.

Dear Apple, im having the same problem and it’s eating precious time of my busy schedule! please fix this asap or let us know when to expect a fix so we can decide on weather it’s worth waiting for or revert to previous OS

All, I found fix for Mac mini m1. Following credible advice articles, I entered Recovery, chose options and then uninstall and reinstall Sonoma 14.0. I had previously changed VLC settings (fail) then uninstalled it.

Experiencing the same issue on Sonoma version 14.0; the entire MacBook freezes and must be hard reset to get it up and running again. It doesn't look like there is a Quicktime fix in 14.1 beta notes.

Have you tried using IINA to see if that helps as a workaround?

Alas, the answer is no. My MacBook Air M1 just crashed while watching a (small) mp4 video.

The Mac crashed after ~15 seconds of viewing the video...

My Mac is MacBook Air M1 (16Go/2To), Buy on May 2020.

Otherwise, all work good

But… it very a BIG problem for me…

Please Apple Resolve this immediately !!!

Little Note:

I Work with an External Monitor (Dell U2415), connected with the official adaptator video Apple (USB-C digital multi-port AV adapter)

I've found that if I convert the .mp4 into a ProRes LT .mov file, it plays perfectly with Quicktime. The only luck I've had with .mp4 is by using Elmedia Player, but I still don't trust it. So for now I'm going with .mov

After a nice talk with an apple support staff, I have found out that the problem appears to be tied to my particular account, possibly related to a third party app.

Therefore, when I playback video on a different account on the Computer, the problem seems to not occur.

They advised me to create a new account and migrate only files, not settings or library.

I agree that this should not happen and should be fixed from the OS side.

I am just offering my insights for you to have a workaround.

Also, since disabling my startup items and quitting my background apps, the problem has not reoccurred either.

So that seems to confirm the interference with these apps.
