Sonoma freezes / crashes when playbacking videos in Quicktime

After I updated to Sonoma playbacking big video files in Quicktime freezes my M1 Macbook Pro. External screen is available, but laggy and all programs are freezed and not in use. Force Quitting programs in available but doesn't fix the freeze. Only way around is to hard boot.

Plz fix this asap.

PS. Thinking going back to Ventura if Sonoma is too buggy to use.

Unfortunately the bug is still present with Sonoma 14.2. In my case I have a Samsung 4K TV connected as a second monitor to my Mac Mini. After some time running a mp4 file with Quicktime everything freezes. As soon as I remove the connection to the TV the freezing stops. Notes: (1) the TV doesn't even need to be on: only connected. (2) The TV is connected via HDMI (no USB-C to HDMI adaptor). The first monitor (DELL 4K)is connected via USB-C to Display-port cable.

So I have USB-C to displayport for my main monitor. 1440p, 120hz (144hz doesn't work! but that's another problem which remains in 14.2).. then I have a 4K samsung Tv connected via USB-C to HDMI adapter. TV is off. Will try it directly connected to HDMI.. then edit comment.

edit:

Yep, you are right. problem is still there! Before my early comment, I played videos in VLC and Quicktime for 30-40 minutes. Switching between them and Safari.. on and off focus, no lock-ups at all, worked fine. Tried different file types and players. ....Switching to HDMI, it froze almost immediately. Switching back to USB-C adapter, it took a little while longer, however, still crashed. I tried switching while videos were playing and that locked up immediately and didn't come back after disconnecting the second display. After logging back in, the problem remains as before with the typc-c adapter. Perhaps are a fresh boot, with no changes to displays, it doesn't do it... might be why the bug has been overlooked in testing.

Same thing to me, since I installed it i had several issues with video applications. First, when i plugged in an external monitor or projector the screen freezes, i keep hearing the sound and after that the mac restarts. As I have 2 macs (one air and the other macbook pro, with m1) I downgraded to Ventura in one of them and worked nicely. I´m giving a second chance in the other one but the issues persists, so today I will downgrade in the other one. Last time that I update the OS whenever it is released.

I don't use any adapter and still have this problems, rather I had.

After a start in safe mode and a restart I can now use the VLC player, the problem with the QT player remains.

For me, that's ok.

Yes Apple I have the exact same problem efter installation of Sonoma 14.0 yesterday. Mac Book Pro, 13 inch, M1, 2020

So far happens only when playing video with app Quicktime player.

I have checked following recomendations...

Quicktime player 10.5 latest uppdate

Ran a virus & malware program

What happens total freeze in Mac. I can still hear the sound of the video in QT.

Only hard restart helps.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Apple if this is an Apple problem when can we expect an uppdate of Sonoma???

I usually wait ca 6 months efter release of a new system program really wish I'd waited this time!!

Thanks for the response!

Yes it works fairly well in VLC as long as the arrow is not placed on the bottom of the screen. Weird ja!

Looks like this is a bit of a problem for several people. Perhaps VLC @videolan can quicker come out with a uppdate to solve the problem with Sonoma?

Maybe a tweet to @videolan will help!

On the other hand @Apple cannot stand around doing nothing as Quicktime doesn't work well with Sonoma?

Hi everybody,

I have EXACTLY the same problem of you all… 😱🧐

Even, I have install macOS 14.1 this morning with a hope of resolve this…

Alas, the answer is no. My MacBook Air M1 just crashed while watching a (small) mp4 video.

The Mac crashed after ~15 seconds of viewing the video...

My Mac is MacBook Air M1 (16Go/2To), Buy on May 2020.

Otherwise, all work good

But… it very a BIG problem for me…

Please Apple Resolve this immediately !!!

Little Note:

I Work with an External Monitor (Dell U2415), connected with the official adaptator video Apple (USB-C digital multi-port AV adapter)

It's exactly the same here.

When a music video is playing in iTunes and opens in a separate window, everything is as usual. But when I move the mouse, the computer immediately freezes completely. Keyboard, trackpad, mouse - nothing works anymore. The video also freezes, but the music continues to play. The computer can then only be switched off and restarted using the power button.

This was not the case before Sonoma!

In addition to the problems with Bluetooth, this is another point where Apple has once again really screwed up.

This is still happening after 14.1.1.

Using the Apple TV app, if I start playing a purchased movie, then leave that playing and use another application, the system locks up a couple seconds later, initially the video freezes and the mouse can be moved for about 20 seconds, then the audio keeps playing for about 1 minute.. then the full crash happens, the screen goes black and it kicks you back to the MacOS login screen and you need to log back in and it reloads all your running apps.

This does not happen in Safari or Chrome, I can play video (4k etc) fine in those browsers, youtube, twitch, disney+, no issues, no crashes no freezes.

Apple need to fix it.

OPERA BROWSER CAUSES FREEZING: I use the last Opera Browser version before it went to version 100 with the new ugly look. I noticed consistent freezing when videos go into POP OUT mode, of course I have disabled the pop out function but thought it was worth mentioning here. My Opera never updates since I have removed the update modules, versions over 100 have too many bugs for now.

Testing further.. if I set each display to the same refresh rate (60hz), the crashes/lockup still occurs, but it takes several minutes of playback before it happens. When the main monitor was at 120hz (1440p), it was taking 20-30 seconds before the system locked. Then, the 60hz main monitor test, still released when pulling the HDMI cable out for the secondary cloned display.
