Sonoma freezes / crashes when playbacking videos in Quicktime

After I updated to Sonoma playbacking big video files in Quicktime freezes my M1 Macbook Pro. External screen is available, but laggy and all programs are freezed and not in use. Force Quitting programs in available but doesn't fix the freeze. Only way around is to hard boot.

Plz fix this asap.

PS. Thinking going back to Ventura if Sonoma is too buggy to use.

Still having this bug with Sonoma 14.3 on BOTH my macbook pro M1 and macbook air M1.

Screen mirroring to an external monitor seems to be the culprit. If i disable it, or just disconnect the monitor, everything works fine. Issue happens with either the HDMI output of my macbook pro M1 or using a USB-C dongle with displayport.

Apple support suggested formatting my mac, but i read people here who did it without luck. I'm quite suspicious when both macs have the same issue, with very different sessions.

I think it's just a huge bug that went under Apple's radar. I suggest everyone to contact apple support and direct them to this thread.

I have quicktime, VLC, youtube in picture in picture mode and the Playstation remote play app crashing really fast here.

Same issue after upgrading my M1 Air to Sonoma (14.0), but the problem persists even after upgrading to 14.1 and doing reboots. When a playback occurs, including Spotify, YouTube in the browser, Slack, even sound effects of some apps, randomly the app freezes, as well as the Menu Bar, and I can't control sound anymore. Usually it un-freezes by itself after 10-20 seconds, or I have to force quit the app, but that doesn't guarantee to fix the issue.

This is extremely annoying as it renders one of the basic possibilities of a laptop unusable. Hope there'll be a fix for it really soon.

Completely agree with you.

Especially since sometimes the problem also arises on the internet (YouTube videos or others...).

And there... impossible to open a YouTube video with VLC or convert it to .mov (at least, in a simple and fast way...

In short... Apple, can you do your work properly and correct it immediately!

This kind of bug should be solved at the beta level.

Thank you and have a good day

Besides playing QT videos, playing videos on Photos(!) will do the same. Video freezes (external display will freeze a few seconds after), sound will continue. keyboards and mice useless, cannot force quit, pink screen and crash after a few seconds up to several very long minutes. Finally, anger and tightened jaw frustration. Mbook Pro 13in M1 2020. Continuous Mac user since OS9 with G3s. This is the worst problem since. Surely Apple knows specially the creators of this OS (wouldn't you watch over your own creation? would you tell your boss about this? how far would your boss go?)

UPDATE: With the Sonoma update, the issue remains the same. The disc utility in respects to scanning drives for health issues, does not resolve anything. The VLC recent update seems to help with playback of videos -along with the usage of alternative video players. Is a shame Apple has not resolved this, is an even greater shame that I cannot go back to previous OS…even after following Apple’s default instructions …we cannot even create a boot disc/drive because something is corrupted along the way. Apple has lost control, they’re not what they used to be.

It's exactly the same here.

When a music video is playing in iTunes and opens in a separate window, everything is as usual. But when I move the mouse, the computer immediately freezes completely. Keyboard, trackpad, mouse - nothing works anymore. The video also freezes, but the music continues to play. The computer can then only be switched off and restarted using the power button.

This was not the case before Sonoma!

In addition to the problems with Bluetooth, this is another point where Apple has once again really screwed up.

Agreed, it looks like they hate when we the people post the truth about them lol, they went and deleted my previous comment which did not have bad language, they just hate it when the truth comes out, it’s too late for them anyway…they leave behind too many dirty tracks. As to how they released Sonoma from the beta stage is beyond me lol

I have to correct myself. I was talking about iTunes, but I meant the Music.app.

And yes, the clean guys in Cupertino don't like it if you don't use morally correct language. Otherwise the world could come to an end.

But what users don't like are hardware faults, lousy software and ignorance on the part of a company that charges exorbitant prices for its products.

I confirm that this problem do not happen if you use another account on the same computer. Also not when you boot in Safe Mode. Disabling logins itens and quitting the background apps does not help either. I guess it doesn't depend on a third party software nor is a general OS problem. If it was, Apple would have fixed quickly. This must be some corrupted file in the user library, related to Quicktime or more general video function. Running First Aid has not helped. I tried to find this corrupted file, but without profound knowlege of the system it's very difficult. It would be great if some expert or people at Apple could give orientations to collect logs to analyse. I hope I have not to do a clean install (by the way I installed Sonoma on top of an older OS - my mistake).

This is still happening after 14.1.1.

Using the Apple TV app, if I start playing a purchased movie, then leave that playing and use another application, the system locks up a couple seconds later, initially the video freezes and the mouse can be moved for about 20 seconds, then the audio keeps playing for about 1 minute.. then the full crash happens, the screen goes black and it kicks you back to the MacOS login screen and you need to log back in and it reloads all your running apps.

This does not happen in Safari or Chrome, I can play video (4k etc) fine in those browsers, youtube, twitch, disney+, no issues, no crashes no freezes.

Apple need to fix it.

Oh snap, now it’s affecting my MB-Air M1…I notice if I play videos in other player brands, my MB-Air will start to flicker…the laptop screen. You see, I have an ASUS ProArt 2K monitor wired to the MB-Air via HDMI, each time I play a video, close it and play another…my Air screen blinks, I have to end up rebooting. The Apple tree certainly has rotten apples on it.

Update: I finally made a clean install and restored data from a time machine backup. Problem NOT solved! Then I created an admin user and from there I deleted and created my normal user again, so any corrupted user file should not survive. This NOT solved again. My Mac is M1 mini connected to a Dell Monitor and a Samsung Q80 TV. For other reason I had to physically disconnect the TV. Since then no more Quicktime bug, running mp4 for many hours. This seems weird but I’m interested to know if someone could solve the same way.

Yes I'm having the precise problem with Sonoma 14.1.1, MacBook Pro 13-inch M1 2020. I'm a scientist and have to give talks with this thing pretty frequently and it has completely messed up several talks now, occurring when the Keynote file I'm using for the presentation gets to a slide with a movie on it, and I'm attached to a projector via an HDMI cable. Several technicians at my university have been trying to debug. Their first suggestion was to use a genuine Apple HDMI adapter - this did not work. Their second suggestion was to try playing the file in a new account: I will test soon and report back. It seems this works for some people but not for others.

The other solution people are reporting is using VLC, which is not an option for Keynote with videos embedded.

This is a total disaster and I don't understand how something this basic is going unaddressed.

OPERA BROWSER CAUSES FREEZING: I use the last Opera Browser version before it went to version 100 with the new ugly look. I noticed consistent freezing when videos go into POP OUT mode, of course I have disabled the pop out function but thought it was worth mentioning here. My Opera never updates since I have removed the update modules, versions over 100 have too many bugs for now.
