Sonoma freezes / crashes when playbacking videos in Quicktime

After I updated to Sonoma playbacking big video files in Quicktime freezes my M1 Macbook Pro. External screen is available, but laggy and all programs are freezed and not in use. Force Quitting programs in available but doesn't fix the freeze. Only way around is to hard boot.

Plz fix this asap.

PS. Thinking going back to Ventura if Sonoma is too buggy to use.

Unfortunately the bug is still present with Sonoma 14.2. In my case I have a Samsung 4K TV connected as a second monitor to my Mac Mini. After some time running a mp4 file with Quicktime everything freezes. As soon as I remove the connection to the TV the freezing stops. Notes: (1) the TV doesn't even need to be on: only connected. (2) The TV is connected via HDMI (no USB-C to HDMI adaptor). The first monitor (DELL 4K)is connected via USB-C to Display-port cable.

Hadn't had an issue for a month or so and thought maybe it had been fixed in an update. But nope. Recently had the same kind of rolling crash while playing a standard MP4 video on a mirrored HDMI monitor. And the crash happened in such a way that none of my open docs triggered auto-recovery or autosave in any other apps. Lost 11 days of work. Definitely my own fault for not doing lots of manual saving, but to be fair, that hadn't been necessary in years.

Apple knows about this issue. They just aren't solving it.

Just an update to this thread: I've been working with Apple Support on it for a couple of months now, so they're aware of the problem and there is still no fix. I just updated to 14.5 and was immediately able to reproduce the crash. So that update doesn't improve anything. Still waiting for them to figure this one out. It's a LONG time to wait for a fix on something that is so basic and critical to anyone who works with video.

That's not really a suitable solution. This wasn't a problem for me before the Sonoma update, so they need to fix it. Did they say what 3rd party app? Rather than completely creating a new account on your machine.. and doing all that work, surely they'd be able to prove the 3rd party app was at fault by you simply removing it? Also, if a 3rd party app is even able to hang the entire operating system, that's still an OS problem to fix. The 3rd party app should crash cleanly, the OS will tell the user it's crashed and then the vendor can update it after they receive the crash reports.

Same issue after upgrading my M1 Air to Sonoma (14.0), but the problem persists even after upgrading to 14.1 and doing reboots. When a playback occurs, including Spotify, YouTube in the browser, Slack, even sound effects of some apps, randomly the app freezes, as well as the Menu Bar, and I can't control sound anymore. Usually it un-freezes by itself after 10-20 seconds, or I have to force quit the app, but that doesn't guarantee to fix the issue.

This is extremely annoying as it renders one of the basic possibilities of a laptop unusable. Hope there'll be a fix for it really soon.

Completely agree with you.

Especially since sometimes the problem also arises on the internet (YouTube videos or others...).

And there... impossible to open a YouTube video with VLC or convert it to .mov (at least, in a simple and fast way...

In short... Apple, can you do your work properly and correct it immediately!

This kind of bug should be solved at the beta level.

Thank you and have a good day

Besides playing QT videos, playing videos on Photos(!) will do the same. Video freezes (external display will freeze a few seconds after), sound will continue. keyboards and mice useless, cannot force quit, pink screen and crash after a few seconds up to several very long minutes. Finally, anger and tightened jaw frustration. Mbook Pro 13in M1 2020. Continuous Mac user since OS9 with G3s. This is the worst problem since. Surely Apple knows specially the creators of this OS (wouldn't you watch over your own creation? would you tell your boss about this? how far would your boss go?)

Upd: My assumption based on my own experience and a reddit thread "Control Center CPU usage and freezes during any video activity" is this:

  1. There was a bug introduced in a Chrome version but later fixed in the version 118.0.5993.117 which was released on October 25th.
  2. Last days Arc Browser which I'm using (and it's based on Chromium) is working just fine, including any playback (Spotify Web, YouTube, Slack Web)
  3. The problem still remains on some Electron apps like Spotify, Slack. Apparently this should be fixed as soon as they update the chromium version they are using.

So, if you are experiencing problems with an Electron app like Slack, Spotify, etc. then make sure that you use either Chrome/Chrome-based browser of version at least 118.0.5993.117 or newer, OR use Safari/Firefox, and use web versions of those apps for now.

However.. The bug I'm describing seems to be a different bug and unrelated to QuickTime.

Agreed, it looks like they hate when we the people post the truth about them lol, they went and deleted my previous comment which did not have bad language, they just hate it when the truth comes out, it’s too late for them anyway…they leave behind too many dirty tracks. As to how they released Sonoma from the beta stage is beyond me lol

I have to correct myself. I was talking about iTunes, but I meant the Music.app.

And yes, the clean guys in Cupertino don't like it if you don't use morally correct language. Otherwise the world could come to an end.

But what users don't like are hardware faults, lousy software and ignorance on the part of a company that charges exorbitant prices for its products.

Oh snap, now it’s affecting my MB-Air M1…I notice if I play videos in other player brands, my MB-Air will start to flicker…the laptop screen. You see, I have an ASUS ProArt 2K monitor wired to the MB-Air via HDMI, each time I play a video, close it and play another…my Air screen blinks, I have to end up rebooting. The Apple tree certainly has rotten apples on it.
