Sonoma freezes / crashes when playbacking videos in Quicktime

What I hate is that we cannot even go back to previous OS because Sonoma has so many bugs if you try to make a boot disc of off Ventura through terminal you can’t because terminal claims it cannot find stuff inside the Ventura in order to make the bootable disc, is a total disaster.

I'm plagued by a similar problem.

No matter what a video format I'm watching with QuickTime oder VLC, as soon as I use my external monitor the system freezes after a few seconds.

With the notebook screen only I have no problems and I can watch videos for many hours.

Yes I sent feedback on this to several channels on the feedback page (macOS, QuickTime, Keynote). The iWorks/Keynote group got back to me with instructions on installing some logging software while I recreated the bug, which I did, and sent a few days ago. I'm still waiting to hear back.

I can confirm that the bug occurs even with running within a new account. I filed feedback with Apple (Product Feedback - Apple) under Keynote, macOS, and QuickTime. The Keynote group responded with instructions to install some logging software and then cause the bug to occur, which I have done and sent the log files in to them. This was on Nov 30 2023 and I've not yet heard back.

Use gom player if vlc freezes your machine. i found from the vlc forum. gom player is working fine for mkv files. same way it freezes when i play youtube in chrome too. only hard reset works.

It's necessary to try this with an EXTERNAL monitor, plugged with an addaptator (Apple official - "USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter") for example !

So I have USB-C to displayport for my main monitor. 1440p, 120hz (144hz doesn't work! but that's another problem which remains in 14.2).. then I have a 4K samsung Tv connected via USB-C to HDMI adapter. TV is off. Will try it directly connected to HDMI.. then edit comment.

The default order is now "Best", which means that, as you say, replies are typically seen out of order.

One can change this on every page by choosing Oldest, but it is a nuisance. One can also change it in one's own profile, so it always appears ordered (but then only if you're logged in).

if you can't fix this please refund the money @apple_support. I bought 64GB M1 pro and thought it will never crash. Crashing while playing a video is not at all acceptable. happened to me multiple times and OS crashed too. went to the store and reinstalled the sonoma. why is that i am not able to force close the app. what kind of OS do you build. Playing a simple mkv file doesnt need lots of compute power my old pentium celeron windows can play that. please fix it or else revert your Sonoma OS. such a shame. I spent 5300$ on this macbook pro and I don't expect it to crash from this kind of machine with an apple M1 Max chip.

I've spent a lot of time with an Apple expert on the phone yesterday, showing how my macbook crashed everytime.

They called me back 24 hours later saying the mac os developers are on it, so hopefully it should get fixed with an update someday.

Yep me too. I freshly installed Sonoma on my Macbook Air M1 and when watching simple .mp4 on Quicktime or VLC and I am connected to an external Display/TV (HDMI), it starts to freeze/extremely lag. Only solution is Force reboot. PLS FIX APPLE DEVELOPERS

I was happy to see that turning off "automatically adjust brightness" solved the problem, but that was only valid the other day. Today I went on YouTube, clicked full screen, and there we go again, – MacBook Pro M1 Max completely inoperable. I've read some people recommend turn off mirroring, which might work, but I *do* need mirroring in my setup.

Not the avid link. When I plug my M1 into my external monitor, I now have it set to main screen. My M1 is blank. A bit of a pain because some things (mail for instance) opens on the Mac screen and I have to move that window over. I'm surprised Apple hasn't fixed this issue. Will it be fixed for the M4?

Same issue on 2 different MacBooks (M1 and M1 Pro) using VLC from totally clean install of OS and reset of the Mac. I sent the first one back because I presumed it was a hardware issue but the same thing is happening on the other one now too.
