After I updated to Sonoma playbacking big video files in Quicktime freezes my M1 Macbook Pro. External screen is available, but laggy and all programs are freezed and not in use. Force Quitting programs in available but doesn't fix the freeze. Only way around is to hard boot.
Plz fix this asap.
PS. Thinking going back to Ventura if Sonoma is too buggy to use.

Still having this bug with Sonoma 14.3 on BOTH my macbook pro M1 and macbook air M1.
Screen mirroring to an external monitor seems to be the culprit. If i disable it, or just disconnect the monitor, everything works fine. Issue happens with either the HDMI output of my macbook pro M1 or using a USB-C dongle with displayport.
Apple support suggested formatting my mac, but i read people here who did it without luck. I'm quite suspicious when both macs have the same issue, with very different sessions.
I think it's just a huge bug that went under Apple's radar. I suggest everyone to contact apple support and direct them to this thread.
I have quicktime, VLC, youtube in picture in picture mode and the Playstation remote play app crashing really fast here.
So it wasn't Avid. But here's something I found. f you freeze, you can wait. After a few seconds, the screen tries to catch up. You can move the mouse to the top left and click and wait again. after a few seconds teh menu drops down and you can choose shut down or restart. Wait and after a few seconds you can you can hit the return button to verify shutdown.
It's weird that Apple hasn't fixed this yet.
Found this on Reddit and it WORKS in full : in System Settings display settings turn OFF "Automatically adjust brightness."
QuickTime, Safari - both work playing video in mirrored mode through an external display.
Not the avid link. When I plug my M1 into my external monitor, I now have it set to main screen. My M1 is blank. A bit of a pain because some things (mail for instance) opens on the Mac screen and I have to move that window over. I'm surprised Apple hasn't fixed this issue. Will it be fixed for the M4?
Just an update to this thread: I've been working with Apple Support on it for a couple of months now, so they're aware of the problem and there is still no fix. I just updated to 14.5 and was immediately able to reproduce the crash. So that update doesn't improve anything. Still waiting for them to figure this one out. It's a LONG time to wait for a fix on something that is so basic and critical to anyone who works with video.
I have this problem as well. VLC player or Elmedia player seem to work. Try using one of these instead of Quicktime.
I have the same problem and have videos I NEED for presentations with an audience of over 100 people. Please fix this.
Dirwin, did that work? Are you now able to play videos with Quicktime?
Not sure message that process I followed worked. Both QuickTime and VLC are working flawlessly now.

I have the same problem and I agree with Joe. Apple needs to figure it out and let the 3rd party vendor know. I do get playback on .mov
Update: Still crashes even when I quit all the apps I can reach and startup items :-(

Quicktime works with .mov, but that's not a solution either.
