After I updated to Sonoma playbacking big video files in Quicktime freezes my M1 Macbook Pro. External screen is available, but laggy and all programs are freezed and not in use. Force Quitting programs in available but doesn't fix the freeze. Only way around is to hard boot.
Plz fix this asap.
PS. Thinking going back to Ventura if Sonoma is too buggy to use.

Still having this bug with Sonoma 14.3 on BOTH my macbook pro M1 and macbook air M1.
Screen mirroring to an external monitor seems to be the culprit. If i disable it, or just disconnect the monitor, everything works fine. Issue happens with either the HDMI output of my macbook pro M1 or using a USB-C dongle with displayport.
Apple support suggested formatting my mac, but i read people here who did it without luck. I'm quite suspicious when both macs have the same issue, with very different sessions.
I think it's just a huge bug that went under Apple's radar. I suggest everyone to contact apple support and direct them to this thread.
I have quicktime, VLC, youtube in picture in picture mode and the Playstation remote play app crashing really fast here.
Something strange i've noticed : if i screen record my mac (cmd+shift+5), i get zero issues playing any video while recording.
As soon as i hit STOP my mac crashed though.
Had a looong call with Apple, they forwarded me to their upper level specialist, which couldn't find a solution and will forward a ticket to the Sonoma devs.
The bug had disappeared with 14.2 and is now back with 14.3. Great work, Apple!
I just updated my M1 MacBook Pro with Sonoma 14.3 and the bug is still there. I'm running a Samsung 32" external monitor and it's behaving just like the previous replies have indicated.
I've spent a lot of time with an Apple expert on the phone yesterday, showing how my macbook crashed everytime.
They called me back 24 hours later saying the mac os developers are on it, so hopefully it should get fixed with an update someday.
In Sonoma 14.2.1 bug is still present for some of us, but others mentioned that earlier.
I'm also experiencing the problem with the Apple TV app on MacOS. The machine freezes after a few seconds. Presumably because Apple TV is based on Quicktime files. To play videos, I use Movist Pro, which works very well so far.
Still glitching every time I connect a monitor, both with Quicktime and VLC.

Same here. MacBook Air 2020, UBS-C dock with HDMI, HDMI cable connected to Dell full HD 27" as second screen (mirrored). Playing MP4 freezes the whole thing, only option is to hard reset.
I've set VLC as the default for MP4's which works fine but this issue is a PITA....can't believe it's not been fixed yet.
Does it do the same thing if the external display is set to extend desktop instead of mirroring?

Same problem here. Quicktime player with screen mirroring via HDMI on external monitor. 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max running Sonoma 14.3.1.
Video freezes at first but audio keeps playing. Then machine crashes/restarts after about 20 seconds. I unplugged the monitor and it was able to play the same movie files without issue.
Same thing to me, since I installed it i had several issues with video applications. First, when i plugged in an external monitor or projector the screen freezes, i keep hearing the sound and after that the mac restarts. As I have 2 macs (one air and the other macbook pro, with m1) I downgraded to Ventura in one of them and worked nicely. I´m giving a second chance in the other one but the issues persists, so today I will downgrade in the other one. Last time that I update the OS whenever it is released.
Using MacOS Sonoma 14.3.1 on a 14" MacBook Pro M1 Max: tried to do screen recording several times - same issue. Submitted a report to Apple.
