It was really stupid that Apple hid such an nice feature that enables one to find their iphone with their iwatch. It can still be done, but it is cumbersome and works only part of the time. Simply push the recessed button on the side of the watch. It does not come up on first couple of trys, but if you keep trying and keep pushing the button, eventually you will see the familiar iphone button with the sound wave symbols on the side. Very poor move Apple.

The flat oval side button has 3 functions

  • Quick press and release brings up Control Center (what used to be Swipe Up)
  • Quick Double press and release brings up Apple Pay and the Apple Wallet
  • Press and Hold for about 5-6 seconds brings up Emergency services display.

No it doesn’t…

What happens when you quick press and release the flat oval side button? More details would help diagnose tour issues.

Use Control Center on Apple Watch - Apple Support

DO NOT hold the button, as that brings up Emergency services and the power off icon.

Settings -> Accessibility -> Side Button Click Speed

“Side Button Click Speed” can adjust the press and release timing, so you get the Control Center display every time. Adjusting The “Side Button Click Speed” is also useful for Apple Pay’s double press and release. There is “Default” (sub second timing of needed), “Slow” (up to a second between press and release), and “Slowest” (up to 2 seconds between press and release). I like the “Slow” setting.

NOTE: Slow and Slowest settings do not mean you have to wait a full second or 2 seconds between press and release. It just means you do not need to be super fast.

I have briefly pressed the flat oval button to bring up the "find my Iphone" feature yet no icon pops up on the screen as before. please advise as the information above in this thread isn't working

What should pop up is the Control Center, not one icon. What is popping up?

What model Watch do you have?

See also BobHarris's information on adjusting the speed of the tap.

EDIT: thanks Bob for sharing the fix. I definitely complained before reading the thread because this has had me pulling my hair out. The side oval is easier than the swipe up, so I’ll eat my words a little. Hopefully I won’t accidentally notify 911 when trying to find my phone…

PeaNoodle -- I'm glad you edited your comment. After reading the first part of your comment on my email -- I came on the site to ask you, "What additional step is there?"

I see you've discovered that the new way of accessing "Find My Phone" is actually as fast --if not faster-- and better in that it will stay on for quite a while, whereas with the wipe-up method, you'd wipe-up & touch the icon once and if you didn't discover your phone at that point, you'd have wipe-up again. And again.

I went through the same process--was furious with the change at first until I learned, here, about the oval-button click. I have let Apple know I like the newer method.

What do you see on the watch's screen after you quickly press the flat oval button? Anything?

Make sure you are pressing it in firmly--but not for long.

If you press and hold, the medical ID, emergency button and the ability to shut down the watch comes up. Does that work on your watch?

You might want to contact Apple tech support if nothing appears on your watch screen. But first, I would try just shutting your watch off and then back on, and see if that works. If not, maybe resetting it.

I hate the new side button thing needed now! I pretty much only buy an Apple Watch to find my iPhone! If anyone makes just a little bracelet that can do the same thing I will buy that asap.

Easy solution: "Hey Siri, find my iPhone". No buttons needed, and you find your iPhone.

But if "Hey Siri" is too hard, then Apple does not read this user-to-user technical support forum for feedback.

But you can send Apple feedback via:

Feedback - Watch - Apple

If enough users send feedback, it is more likely a decision maker will see it, and maybe take action.

The Control Center was moved from swipe up to the oval button on the right side of the phone. Just press the button once quickly. It is all explained here:
