Mouse cursor on iPad disappears using Magic Keyboard on latest Sonoma (17.0.3) 6 October 2023

The mouse cursor using a Magic Keyboard (all Apple hardware) disappears randomly, even when not connected to power. Detach, re-attach the keyboard does not work. Muddling with Accessibility settings as suggested in many posts, does not work. Since the iPad is not connected to power, no suggestion to disconnect and reconnect the power source is useful. This seems like a software bug on the trackpad since the keyboard works perfectly, I can use my finger to move around the screen (since I don't know where the keyboard trackpad cursor is) and then type when I'm in a text area.

I think that it's about time Apple really looked into this. There are some suggestions from the Mac forums on Universal Access problems (i.e., when a Mac is close to a device where screens can be shared), but that's not the case here. I use my iPad away from power and not near anything else (except my iPhone) and when I'm switching from window to window, very often I'll lose the cursor.

Rebooting works, but that's a last option.

Changing the mouse/trackpad color does NOT work - nothing does, except a reboot.

Don't you think it's time Apple took this seriously?

Hello tonymathenge,

If the mouse pointer is not showing up, check to make sure it's currently set to a color you can see. You can adjust the color settings in Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control > Color.

It's also a good idea to check the gold contacts on the back of the iPad that connect to the keyboard to make sure they're clean and free of any debris or corrosion. While you have the keyboard disconnected, check the gold contacts on the keyboard as well.

You'll want to make sure you've also covered the basics like restarting the iPad and making sure it's up to date.

Restart your iPad

Update your iPad

If you can't connect your iPad to your Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or Smart Keyboard Folio

If the mouse pointer is still not working, you'll want to contact Apple to report the issue: Get Support

Cheers!

Hi Jaym_8,

Thanks for the answer, checking the pointer colour is one thing that I have not tried. The cursor normally disappears when I'm in the middle of something, either switching from app to app, or just dragging things around using the Magic Keyboard.

As I mentioned, the iPad is at the latest software level, so it's not a software update issue.

But rebooting always fixes the problem.

Next time it happens, I'll be sure to check the colour suggestion.

Thanks,

Tony

Tony, just to be clear, my response was to the Apple Community Specialist and not your post, because every time I’ve come here to get any possibly new answers, the Apple responses seem to be mostly canned content of no use (probably AI generated).

The vanishing cursor act began after I upgraded to the latest OS for my iPad Pro 11” 2021 model, and I now sorely regret it. The constant suggestion to keep your software up to date, throughout my decades of ownership of Apple products, is often not true unless your product is relatively new.

Not sure I feel comfortable with the link.

I’m currently working with a Senior Advisor. I’ve sent a screen recording of the issue. I’ve uploaded logging info from the Privacy and Security settings (they send a link)

Now the engineering department is asking me to call when the issue is in progress.

A few days ago the issue happened, called the number they provided. Got a random Senior Advisor spent 15 min explaining the issue. She had no idea what to do.

At this point, I’ve found the address for Apple Corporate in Cupertino (see below) to send a formal complaint. I haven’t found an email address. The only option is to use US mail.

I’m in the process of writing my complaint, now.

I also plan on writing/attaching a Google Review to their corporate office.

Best of luck to you.
